low me to introduce myself. I’m Scuba! I’m about 7 months old and weigh 40 pounds. I was picked up by animal control as a stray. I was very skinny when my foster dad got me, but he keeps telling me that I’ll be gaining weight to a healthy level; I just need to be patient. But how can I???? Food is the best thing ever!!! I’ll do just about anything for a treat. He also says I’m going to be a big girl by the size of my ears, paws, and tail! I’m working on being crate trained and have enjoyed every meal in there and had some mentally stimulating games in there, so the crate is not super scary to me, although I’d much rather be out of it with alongside my people. I think I might be getting close to outgrowing it, but I think that’s because I SPRINT to my crate whenever my foster dad walks in the room with my bowl. My foster dad called me a slipper thief and that he has the picture to prove it, but I plead the fifth! I live with my older foster brother who is a Freedom GSR alumnus, but he’s a grump sometimes and likes to keep his distance. When I’ve been the annoying little sister, he’s corrected me very appropriately so I’m learning when enough is enough! I think I’d thrive if there was another, socialized dog around, but I pick up on social queues quickly regardless. My older brother played with me a lot when we went to the beach together. As I’m a dark coat girl, the shade from the umbrella was my favorite part. I waded into the water with the help of treats (told you!) and it felt good in the sun, but the little waves made me a little uneasy. With enough exposure though, I know I’ll do well in water! Everyone keeps telling me that I’m just the sweetest pup, and well, I’d have to agree with them. Even though I’ve had a rough start in life, I just have so much love to give, and I’ve not met a stranger yet. I am eager to learn and would thrive with more training. I just want to play with every dog I see and want love and cuddles from every person I walk by. I am house broken although sometimes I have a little accident when I get too excited. I’ve started to let my foster dad know when it’s time to go potty, although he’s been taking me out routinely every few hours or so. I know “sit” very well since that usually means TREATS and my recall has improved a lot! Since I’m so smart, I know the basics. I would do well with a fenced-in back yard, at least 4 feet high, but it wouldn’t be a necessity. I sleep through the night in my crate without any fuss! If you’d like me to join your family, reach out to your adoption coordinator. If you don’t have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue . I’m being fostered in Wilmington, NC.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
