ANASTASIA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Anastastia Best Guess for Breed: Retriever and springer spaniel mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of July 2025 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 40 lbs Gets Along With: Anastasia is very social around other dogs and has been good with the kids she met! We haven't seen her with cats but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: Puerto Rico shelter; needs a foster or forever home in the DC area to get up here! Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Anastasia would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure she can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes. Anastasia is Looking For: Bottom line: Her own humans to love and be loved by. This sweetie was found as a stray in Yauco, Puerto Rico in November 2024. She was originally supposed to be a TNR dog but when the rescue saw how friendly and loving she was, they changed gears and set a goal of getting her adopted. This is what the Puerto Rico rescue says about her: "She is very sweet, loyal, easygoing, and happy. Anastasia's last foster described her as super loving, chill, loves looking out the window, being by your side, going for walks, she's a velcro dog 100% Anastasia is quiet, is up for anything, loves being with her person. She is social around other dogs and all humans" Sounds like an all-around great dog to us! If that's what you're looking for, let us know! What My DC Area Foster Says About Me: We will update this once she has arrived in the DC area and spent some time in foster care. Heartworm information: Anastasia is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but has been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. Anastasia has completed the treatment and the activity restriction phase. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
