R FOREVER HOME!!!! \Name: Robert Best Guess for Breed: Boxer/Hound Mix Best Guess for Age: 5 years SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 72 lbs Gets Along With: Robert gets along with other dogs. He seems to be good with kids and cats though has not lived with them - only met them in passing. We are happy to talk about integration if relevant. Currently Living at: DC area foster Robert is Looking For: Robert was adopted from Lucky Dog in 2020 but now his humans are moving somewhere they can't take him and he's looking for a new family. This sweet boy is out of his crazy puppy years and used to living in a home so he's a great fit for someone with a more mellow lifestyle who wants a companion. What My Foster Says About Me: Robert is a gem! This guy was obviously well-loved and well-trained in the past. He made himself right at home on arrival, and walks right into his crate and curls down to sleep like a mouse all through the night. He loves to play and is a tough chewer. Squeaky toys seem to be his favorite, and he also likes balls, puzzles and chew toys. He walks well on a leash and is learning to keep the leash loose even when he is excited. He is quick to train and eager to please. Someone had already taught him to sit, lay down, stay (brief periods), paw/other paw, high five, “no”, and more. He seems to come when called, and will drop his ball readily when playing fetch. We haven’t seen him try to “counter surf”. He hasn’t tried to get on the furniture, and he only ventured upstairs once on his own. Robert loves to meet people and did well when he met a young child (6-7). He seems to get along with most other dogs, and we’ve seen him keep his cool when other dogs were reacting to one another. He’s a very good boy who just needs a lucky home to make his life complete. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
