mp;rsquo;ve ever come across. She’s never met a stranger and greets all humans big and small with a smiling face, wagging tail, and eager as can be to share her puppy kisses. She’s a bit over 1 year old, and perfectly sized at about 35 lbs, though with time and kibbles, she should fill out a bit more. This girl’s superpower is winning hearts, whether you’re on two legs or four. Her foster parents have exposed her to big dogs and small dogs alike, and she always makes friends. She has shown zero signs of resource guarding and happily shares toys and enjoys dental chews near her friends. She’s even won over the resident grump who will even share his toys which unheard of in the foster household. Lovebug is on the submissive side and after proper and gentle greetings will use her magic ability to get her new best friends to romp and play. She would make a wonderful addition to any existing furry family members or would be quite happy to soak up all the attention for herself. Speaking of, she lives for your attention and pets. Something of a Velcro pup, she’d much rather be attached to your hip than left behind. And apologies to any, “No dogs on the couch” families, but that just won’t work for this girl as she really is just a love machine (and doesn’t wanna work for nobody but you). And with her affinity for her humans, she has excellent recall (just give a whistle and she’ll come bounding back with a smile.) Early on she has shown an affinity for shoes when left to her own devices, but with intervention and given healthy substitutes (bones, toys) has been quick to drop unwanted behavior. On the cattle dog crazy scale, she’s a very moderate and manageable 5 or 6. She does require a daily dose of zoomie release but knows how to settle down for some quality snuggle time in front of the tube. She’s very adventurous and adaptable and loves to run, swim, walk, or play with another dog, so she’ll be happy to get the energy out during whatever activity you choose. She hardly ever barks, is quiet as a mouse in her crate, rides well in a car and is a quick study at training. She is great with kids, and while not officially cat tested her foster family believes that would be fine as she doesn’t bother the chickens and other critters she’s met. Lovebug is up to date on all vaccines, spayed, chipped, and ready to be an incredibly loving addition to one lucky family. Lovebug is being fostered in Southbury, CT. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
