made available for adoption! -Can take time to warm up to new people and have big feelings. Adopters should anticipate a few `dates` with Luna to get to know her prior to adoption. Trust us, the wait will be so worth it. Once Luna knows you, she gets very excited to see you - soaking up pets, cuddling and is good with handling (including baths). -Has an adorable happy dance when she sees the leash. She loves to walk outside, hanging out in her yard and sunbathing. She still has a `get off my lawn` bark at passerbyers but is decreasing that behavior thanks to positive reinforcement based training. -Does well left alone while her guardians are away from the house free range. She does not do well kennelled while left (causes distress and she can climb over baby gates) but she can be kennelled at night in the same bedroom as her foster parents. Luna is mostly house trained. -Has a `foster brother` (a medium sized male dog) whom she coexists nicely with but is unattached to. She also has grown ambivalent with the neighbor's dog. Historically, Luna has lived in a backyard with a female German Shepherd. On walks, Luna can be reactive on leash but is working with her wonderful foster parents through treats and redirection. She doesn't like when her foster brother goes near her food and bones but it has been managed nicely in her current spot. Luna does have some medical needs that will need to be managed in her next home to help her stay comfortable including an old fracture that is functionally stable in one leg paired with a luxating patella in a different leg. This will likely result in more frequent vet visits and working in coordination with her veterinarian to monitor any changes in her gait and comfort. Adopters will need to ensure that they have the resources (time, patience and finances) to work with Luna throughout her lifetime. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
