SAM NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Sam and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (07/27) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Silver Spring, MD (12020 Cherry Hill Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20904)! Name: Sam Best Guess for Breed: Jack Russell terrier and chihuahua mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of April 2025 Sex: Male Approximate Weight: 28 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats but we are happy to discuss integration techniques. Sam cannot go to a home with kids under age 15. Currently Living at: DC area home - needs a foster! Check out this video of Sam: youtube/shorts/N-9ZEnGu1XM?si=Vof5zYEnwQRfa8Iq Special adoption considerations: Due to his shyness and nervousness, Sam needs an experienced owner. We do not recommend him for a home with children under the age of 15. We would be happy to discuss this more in depth with any applicant. Sam is Looking For: His forever home! This cutie, through no fault of his own, now needs a new home. He's looking forward to his new chapter, eagerly awaiting all the sniffy walks he will get with his new humans, romps in the park, and all the adventures they can dream up. He's out of the puppy yips and as a wise, experienced dog, knows what's most important in life: Being safe and loved and under his own roof, and that's right at the top of his wish list. Right now, he's shy and unsure in new environments, so he needs extra patient and loving adopters who will help him become more confident in new places. In exchange, he offers all the adoring gazes and happy tail wags he's stockpiling at the shelter and loyal companionship for all his days. What do you say? Can you see Sam trotting by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: Sam becomes more confident every day. He is still shy when outside and will stay close on walks while he frequently looks at you. He understands going to the bathroom outside but has his favorite places to go - #1 is the dog park! Inside he is more bouncy and playful. He has a rougher play style but hasn’t been destructive with anything. In a previous foster home he enjoyed playing with the resident dog. I would describe his energy level as medium+. He gets nervous when he sees big dogs and wants to observe them before greeting. He is learning house manners, basic commands, and takes gentle corrections well. He does very well in the crate and will settle when asked. He loves giving and receiving affection and has the potential to be a snuggler given time and patience so he can fully relax in his environment. Sam loves cuddles, play time, and chewing on a bone. He is good walking on leash and highly food motivated, which makes training easy. It may take Sam a little time to warm up to you but once he does he will shower you with love. Sam adores his people and once you are his person he will love you forever. Medical: Sam was heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! He is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we arrange for a follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. Sam has already completed all these steps and tested negative at his six month test! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
