fun-loving, toy-fetching, kid-friendly little guy looking for a calm, committed home where he can be the one and only furry love of your life. This spunky 9–10 lb Chihuahua/Terrier mix has been cherished since 2022 by a loving family, but due to their current dogs not meshing with Herman’s bold, no-nonsense attitude toward other pups, it’s time to find him a home where he can truly shine—solo. Herman adores children and has been nothing but gentle and affectionate with kids ages 5 to 13. He’ll gladly play fetch until your arm gives out and might even give your baby a kiss on the nose. But when it comes to other dogs? Herman is fiercely protective and must be the only pet in the household. He has shown aggression toward all dogs, regardless of size or temperament, and will need a pet-free environment. He is not yet housebroken, but he will go potty outside when taken out regularly on leash. Due to his elderly owner’s limitations, he’s mostly used belly bands, but he’s smart and with consistency, we truly believe he can learn. He’s also not crate-trained right now, but was previously, and did well—so the potential is definitely there! Herman’s Ideal Home: No other pets A patient, experienced dog owner Someone willing to work on his house training and leash manners A safe, secure home environment (he has tried to dart out doors in the past) Someone who loves throwing toys—and receiving kisses in return Herman’s Highlights: Very affectionate with humans Loves kids Loves toys and playing fetch Not destructive in the home Eats Pure Balance Salmon & Pea food Current on all vaccines, flea and heartworm prevention Will come with his vet info and his crate (if needed) Herman is full of love, full of energy, and full of personality. His family is heartbroken to let him go, but they want him to have the undivided love and attention he deserves. If you’re ready to be his hero, his fetch partner, and his forever family, apply today through Tired Dog Rescue. Located in Gulfport, MS – Will transport up to ~75 miles (not into New Orleans). Apply at .tireddogrescue One dog homes only, please.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
