Rico are adoption pending while we continue to raise gorgeous Freya and handsome Beauford and Heimdall! These sweet and beautiful babies are thriving in foster homes, they have all more than doubled their intake weight. Let us introduce you to Freya who lived with her littermate Heimdall in a joint foster home until recently. They've learned all about the resident rabbit and two cats for a week while the two resident dogs and child were on vacation visiting extended family. Now that everyone is back home and integrated back into daily life, we wanted to reunite Freya and Beau since they are more attuned to each other. Earlier this week Freya, Beau, Trixie and Heimdall spent the afternoon at Paws n Play for a meet n greet at which Trixie found her forevers. These pups are also great with kids as you can see from Paws n Play's share of the Meet n Greet here. Freya just like her littermates is a typical shepherd pup following her humans, loving snuggles, and exploring a widening world. Freya is the instigator of all play and shenanigans, the bestest snuggler and the biggest fan of treats. She has mastered the sit command and knows "off". Although Freya and Heimdall shared a crate when they first arrived, last week they began to sleep in their individual crates as we teach them to be independent. Freya's still get plenty of snuggles as they nap through out the day, sometimes choosing to sleep touching each other, other times away from each other. These puppies are lovely and allow all handling including nail trims, baths and belly rubs. While living with Heimdall, Freya loved to be the center of attention whereas living with Beau she's very neutral. All the pups potty promptly when taken outside frequently, leading us to believe that they were well taken care of and handled nicely in their original home. Their nibbling on toes and tugging on clothes has resolved in favor of toys as they've matured and their interests have expanded. Freya does like to collect rocks in the yard and carry them as treasures and we're working on replacing her interest in rocks with better options. Freya and Beau are on a weekend trip to Tahoe, we're excited to report that they were terrific in the car on the long ride and mastered the stairs easily on the first try following the resident dogs up and down easilly. All of the puppies have received their first vaccines, been dewormed, and are healthy, chubby, and happy! Stay tuned for more updates. Freya will thrive in an experienced forever home committed to environmental exposure to continue the excellent foundation she's receiving in her foster home, ongoing training, and structure shepherd puppies need to grow into neutral adult dogs. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
