Description

American Pit Bull Terrier Dogs For Adoption in Springfield, MA, USA

Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Ciabatta is a super sweet girl with a lot of love to give! She arrived at TJO with some skin allergies that she's currently being treated for, but she doesn'

t let that stop her from enjoying her favorite toys and people. She loves spending time outside in the yard, but wouldn't be against watching a good movie from the comfort of the couch. OTHER PETS: Ciabatta got along with another similarly-sized dog, but quickly gave appropriate feedback to a dog that was pushy during play. She would likely get along best with another mellow dog that will listen well to feedback and signals, and will let her have her own space. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Someone who has an established relationship with a vet would be the best match for Ciabatta, since her skin allergies are likely chronic and she may need ongoing medications, baths, and a prescription diet. [Some Experience] KIDS: Ciabatta is tolerant with handling and would likely do well with younger kids, however interactions between children and dogs should always be closely monitored to ensure that both parties remain comfortable and safe. [5+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Ciabatta has been a relaxed but playful dog during her stay at TJO, and always loves to run around with her toys! However, it's possible that she may become more energetic once her skin heals and she settles into her new home. Regular exercise and plenty of mental enrichment will help meet all her needs. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: It is currently unknown whether Ciabatta's skin condition is due to environmental or dietary allergies, so she will do best with someone that has a good relationship with their vet to ensure that she gets the care she needs, even after her skin heals. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Ciabatta not only learn her basic cues, but also help her to bond with her new owner. [Minimal] GROOMING: Ciabatta is currently receiving medicated baths to help her skin heal and encourage new, healthy fur to grow in. It's possible that she may need to continue her shampoo treatments occasionally throughout her life if her allergies were to flare up again. [Routine Bathing]

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
