application, we will move the dog to our adoptive area for you to meet, greet and hopefully adopt. Sometimes we will have more than one application on a dog. That does not mean it automatically goes to another family but you should be aware of the fact that until you are approved and set up for the meet/greet.. the dog could get adopted by another applicant. Hello to all of my fellow Mastiff lovers. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Bear and I am the quintessential Mastiff mix of loyalty, playfulness, gentleness, and protectiveness. I would love to share my home with a human/s who know my breed well, as I am not a novice owner. I take my job seriously and want you to know when there is a shift in the environment that may need your attention. I am not a big barker but I am vigilant until you tell me that everything is ok. I enjoy my crate and it can be a place of calm if I start to take my job too seriously. I am completely house trained as well. My strengths: Smart - I know my 8 basic safety commands in varying capacities - Look, Touch, Sit, Down Stay, Come, Leave it, and Place. Playful - I love toys, running, jumping, and hanging with my people. Polite - I am polite on leash unless something fun comes my way like chickens or dogs. I can become cautious if I see strangers but I move along fine if you tell me everything's ok. Quiet - I am not a big barker and would prefer watching as things come and go in my environment. Loyal - I am the most trustworthy guy you will ever know once I know that you are a part of my pack. I am trusting and enjoy a cuddle once in a while. I will look for you and want to be with you always. Trusting - Once you belong to me, I am yours forever. I am a great sleeper and love my meals. I enjoy riding in cars. I enjoy long walks when the weather is not too hot. I think I would enjoy hiking a lot. Things I am working on: Commands - Perfecting my 8 safety commands. Trusting new things - The more places I go and the more you can let me watch from a distance, the more I can trust new places. Trusting new people - I need slow introductions with new people who are confident and want to have a relationship. I am not interested in casual interactions. I will do best if I know what you expect of me in these situations but I would prefer not to be pushed or "talked into" socializing. I will do better with no children or other pets in the home, as I have a hard time sharing the affection. I was not proofed with cats so I don't know how I feel about them. General Mastiff traits - Mastiffs are known for their gentle, calm, and loyal personalities, making them excellent family pets. They are also protective and courageous, exhibiting a natural instinct to guard their families and homes. Despite their imposing size, Mastiffs are often described as "gentle giants" due to their affectionate and patient nature. Here's a more detailed look at their personality traits: Loyal and Devoted: Mastiffs form strong bonds with their families and are known for their unwavering loyalty. Gentle and Affectionate: They are naturally gentle and affectionate, especially with their family members, and enjoy cuddling and close companionship. Calm and Patient: Mastiffs are generally calm and patient, making them suitable for households with children and other pets, though early socialization and training are still important. Protective and Courageous: They possess a natural instinct to protect their families and territory, making them excellent watchdogs. Intelligent and Eager to Please: Mastiffs are intelligent dogs that learn quickly and respond well to positive reinforcement training methods. Relatively Quiet: While they can be alert and watchful, they are not typically known for excessive barking. Can be Suspicious of Strangers: It's common for Mastiffs to be wary of strangers, but with proper socialization, they can learn to be more accepting. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
