Foster Home Feedback ** Not Apartment Friendly 7/9/25 Foster Feedback: We have been fostering Adora a little over a week now and wow is she a great little lady! When I first met her she was very scared and guarded but with some treats and patience she warmed up and has become my little shadow. Once she realized I was her buddy she was very open to meeting other new people and quickly made friends with my husband and children. My kids are 6 and 4 years old and she does very well with them. They know they aren't allowed to pick her up and are respectful of her space. She will now seek them out to sit by and receive attention from them. In typical chihuahua fashion Adora tends to be a bit on the vocal side. When we are outside she is on alert at all times and will let you know if she spots any activity taking place in the neighborhood. On walks, she will vocalize when she sees other dogs and people but will redirect with a treat. Adora LOVES walks! She gets so excited when she thinks it's time for a walk. She will play bow, give her talkative little grumbles, and paw at your legs. It's adorable! Adora also loves her kennel. She has a bed in there with her blanket which she loves to burrow under. I often have to say her name to be sure she is under there and I will just see her peek out from underneath. She sleeps quietly in her kennel all night with the door open. She will head to her kennel throughout the day for a little cat naps as well. When Adora first arrived she had a couple accidents when adjusting to our routine, but now is very reliable about going outside. She is a very affectionate dog and loves to give kisses, receive belly rubs, and lay next to you on the couch. She isn't shy about letting you know if you slack off in the petting department, she will nudge you hand to remind you she is there. Adora took a bit to warm up to our household dogs (we have three bigger dogs) but seemed less intimidated by my family members small dogs- particularly the more mellow little dog. I think Adora would enjoy a friendly dog or cat friend that doesn't try and bulldoze her over. She is a little thing at only 7.5 pounds, so doesn't appreciate the crazy shenanigans. Adora is going to be the best addition to her new family. She is so loving and happy. I think she is used to people being around the house a lot of the time and is a joy to have around. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
