alls “foster camp”. She says it’s like summer camp for human kids, and so far - I’m having a BLAST. It’s definitely been a lot of changes for me in the last few months, but I’m enjoying learning boundaries, earning rewards, and spending time with friends. Foster camp is a perfect spot for a 55 lb. Akita/Pit mix like me! Some Lady that picked me up says that I’m very much like a human toddler - whatever that means. I’m still young at 2 years old and I like to put things in my mouth gently to learn about them. There a lot in the world that I’ve never seen or experienced, so I can get a little startled. Some Lady says that desensitization training and confidence building through positive reinforcement will help me be learn how to be comfortable in my own space and not feel like I have to be fake tough. Some Lady says that you and I will need to take classes together to build a strong understanding of each other. Here at foster camp, Some Lady has an Orange Cat - and Orange Cat didn’t like me trying to play dog with him. He bopped my nose, and now I leave Orange Cat alone. Some Lady says that if you have cats, they will need to be dog savvy. Making friends with the other dogs here at camp is a little scary for me too. What if they don’t like me? Maybe I’ll act like I don’t like them first…. I don’t want to get hurt! Some Lady is really helpful in introducing me to friends of all shapes and sizes and watching body language to see when one of us isn’t ready to be friends with the other. So far, I have been friends with everyone with time and positive reinforcement. Some Lady also has Some Birds at camp and they’re interesting to me. They’re pretty funny looking, and I like to stare at them. Some Lady says that’s rude though, so she gives me a snack when I choose a different activity. I’ve considered chasing them, but Some Lady is very observant of my body language and distracts me with yummies and play before I get the chance. Some Lady doesn’t have human kids at foster camp, so I haven’t met any of those yet with her. But, I used to live with a 6 year old. Some Lady thinks that if you have kids, they would need to be older and could benefit from going to classes with me, too. A family that trains together, stays together. Some Lady also has a Some Guy and he’s a hoot and a half and fun to play with too. I’m really glad to have my own space in my crate for quiet time and bedtime, because sometimes camp is overstimulating, and I trust that I have a spot that is all mine where I can just be a potato and relax. Foster camp has lots of chewies, toys & snacks thanks to what Some Lady calls Donors - so thank you Donors! I’m also glad that I don’t have to worry about having any kids of my own because I’ve been spayed, I also am super healthy and protected with all my vaccinations, and I have a microchip! Wellp, that’s all for now, future furever family! Hopefully I’ll get to meet you soon. While foster camp is fun, I really want to find a home and family of my very own. All my loves and drools, Nev If you’re interested in meeting Nev, please fill out a statement of interest with Alternative Humane Society here: alternativehumanesociety/statement-of.../

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
