t just 9 months, she weighs 23 pounds and will probably be in the small size (Up to 30 pounds) range. She is considered a retriever mix. What is hard to understand is that she was dumped at a shelter because she was no longer wanted by her owner. She must have been confused with no place to call home. Her past cannot be changed but her future certainly can, and she is on the path of a bright future. Scarlet is good with other dogs and children. It is unknown if she has lived with cats. Structure and routine are the key components for Scarlet to be successful and to thrive with her forever family. It will take time for her to settle into a new home and schedule and for her to find her place in the family. She is leash trained! It is unknown if she has spent time in a crate or has been house trained. A refresher course will probably bring her up to speed. She will need an owner who has knowledge and/or experience working with puppies. Using the right guidance with consistency and patience, will help her with the skills she needs to master. Cheerful praise and lots of treats will go a long way in helping Scarlet master those skills. It will take time and energy, but the result will be worth it. It would be best to start at the beginning with house and crate training. Since she is like most young pups, Scarlet will probably be a quick learner once routines are established. Daily short walks (under thirty minutes) will be a good opportunity to work on reinforcing leash skills as well as socialization skills. It will be a new world to her with all the new sights, smells, sounds, and people along her walk. Please note: She may not be a running companion until at least age one when her growth plate closes. Scarlet will also appreciate free time in a secure back yard. Keeping her mind active with activities that provide physical and mental stimulation will prevent boredom. Could she be a future frisbee player? Are you willing to work with this pup so that she can once again feel wanted and loved? If yes, read on. * When considering adoption, keep in mind that dogs thrive on structure and routine. They adjust much better when their owners are committed to providing consistency and stability. The adoption fee for Scarlet is $500. That includes the cost of spaying/neutering, up to date vaccinations, foster care, rescue and transportation fees. To get the ball rolling, head over to our Adoption Application and submit your application today. A Dog Star representative will contact you within 24 hours. To speed up the process, contact your vet and give them permission to speak with us. If you do not get a response within 24 hours, check your spam folder.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
