pherds. Please vote daily from each device until August 15th at votesacramento. Look for us in the Service Category under Animal Nonprofits. Thank you for being our heroes! Get ready to meet a handsome boy! We are excited to announce the arrival of a stunning long-coat German Shepherd who is about to steal hearts. This one-year-old bundle of joy has charm and a love for people, but he may need some guidance with his manners since he has been a free spirit. Well-loved by the shelter staff, who have known him since he was six months old, he is a favorite for good reason. This sweet boy gets along well with other dogs and craves companionship. Despite a challenging past that involved wandering with his small breed buddy due to inadequate fencing at his original home—leading to numerous visits to the shelter—he is now ready for a fresh start. What he longs for is a forever home where he can truly flourish and showcase his lovable nature. We can confirm that this handsome boy is fabulous. He hitched a ride to his foster home today as an easy passenger and settled in nicely with the resident shepherds. Greeting his foster dad with the wiggliest body, Jakab loves gazing into your eyes, leaning his body into yours and enjoys lots of scratches and sweet talk. Jakab is potty trained and at ease in his crate. He loves being brushed, laying right at your feet. The puppy in him is already peeking by the slipper stealing and wondering what's on the counters but Jakab loves to please his people and we'll get the puppy sheninagans sorted out. It's only the first day and we're in love. The youngest resident shepherd, also a long coat, and Jakab have very similar play styles enjoying play bows, zoomies and chest bumps with glee. Jakab spent the last couple of weeks in the UCDVMTH Canine Enhancement Program, where fifteen shelter dogs are selected each year to be cared for by vet students. They attend classroom labs that provide educational experiences for the students throughout the instructional year. These noninvasive labs teach vet students about animal handling, physical examinations, radiology, ultrasound, orthopedic examinations, and behavior temperament assessments. Jakab was sad when separated from his care team outside of the labs and was so excited by the attention in the lab setting that his care team recognized that he belonged in a loving home rather than the confines of vet school kennels, and we stepped in to learn more about this adolescent to find him a perfect forever match. Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and our newest Threads account, where we post plenty of news and updates about our shepherds. As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. There are many shepherds in our local shelters who require our help for a fresh start. Would you be willing to open your home and share part of your life to help these dogs find new families? You provide the love, and we will provide everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Complete this .shepheroes/foster-form, and we will be in touch as soon as possible. We appreciate your consideration.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
