ccasionally have dogs/puppies placed in foster homes in the north/northeast. In the cases where the pet is somewhere other than Arkansas, it will be noted beside the name of the pet. Dovey is a precious little "Cockapoo" who was found abandoned at a park. She was so matted she couldn't walk, so we know someone carried her there and left her. She was sitting on hot concrete, in the sun, crying audibly, and unable to move. We shaved her down because there was no saving her hair. It was the worst I've ever seen. Once shaved, she felt so good she couldn't be still! Her back was all drawn up from being so matted and it took a few days for her to straighten out and walk/run normally. Today, a few weeks later, she is totally normal. Dovey is extremely affectionate and never meets a stranger. She loves everyone. Dogs, cats, kids, adults, literally everyone. She is about 2 years old and weighs 19lbs now. She was 14 lbs when rescued, and the hair we shaved off of her weighed almost 4 lbs. Her current weight is ideal for her. Dovey is moderately energetic and walks very well on leash. She would make a great walking/running partner. She loves going to doggy daycare and is quite popular with all of the other dogs there! She is definitely one of the cool kids! Dovey is working on house training and making good progress. We believe, due to the way her hair was matted around her feet, that she lived most of her life in a crate before being rescued. So crate training is still a work in progress. She seems to think that's where she is supposed to potty, I assume because that's the only place she could potty until now. She will relearn, but it will take some time. She also is a submissive pee'er. Sometimes when approached, she will pee a little bit in submission. Hopefully this will correct as she gains more confidence. Dovey has great potential and is so deserving of a loving home. She has survived a very hard life and it is our hope that the rest of her life will be happy enough to make her forget the hell she lived through. She is spayed, UTD on vaccines, microchipped, and on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. Located in Arkansas, but transport is available. Adopter must be able to pick up or arrange for someone to pick up for them at one of the following times/locations. Harrisburg, PA 2am Saturdays Port Jervis, NY 5am Saturdays Southington, CT 8am Saturdays East Hartford, CT 11am Saturdays. To apply, please fill out the adoption app: form.jotform/212690945239059 email apps.aasrgmail with any questions. Our typical adoption fee for puppies younger than 6 months old is $400, and for older puppies and adults, the usual fee is $350. This includes microchip, spay/neuter, up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, dewormings, flea/tick treatment, and heartworm test (if over 6 months old) as well as heartworm treatment if they test positive. There is a transport fee of $150 per dog, depending on the transporter. We use Pack Leaders Rescue Dog Transport most often, but also use Hearts Transport as well on occasion. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
