;rsquo;ve seen things you wouldn’t believe…. mostly naps. I have mastered the art of the perfect snooze! I may need a little extra time to get up, but trust me, the wisdom I offer is worth the wait! I am not a dog, who will play fetch for hours, but I will always happily accept butt scratches and words of affirmation! I sometimes like to tell everyone what I think, with my aged, howl bark, but make sure you listen up when I do, because I will likely fall asleep promptly after. Here is what my foster family says about me! Dallas is the poster child of the “sweet old man”. He has not met anyone he hasn’t liked. We just know he has a lifetime of stories that he wants to spend his days telling his forever family. Dallas enjoys the simple things in life, wet food, soft treats and being spoiled. Dallas currently lives in a home with three other male dogs, two guinea pigs and two children. He does well with other dogs and is friendly. He would do best with dogs that have some manners, as he does not like when other dogs are pushy, rough play and don’t have respect for his space. He does well with children also, but due to his age he would do best in a home with slightly older children who again understand respect and boundaries for animals. He is currently being treated like royalty by our 7-year-old. Dallas is up to date on vaccines and microchipped and neutered. He did attempt some marking, considering he is living with other boy dogs but that has slowly decreased and will likely be eliminated with time. He does wear a male wrap in the home, which he is fine with and while wearing the wrap does not attempt any marking or have any accidents in the home. When he needs or wants to go outside, he will either go to the door or bark to let you know. Dallas is crate trained and rarely gives a fuss. If he does it is a ten second howl and then he lays down, but Dallas does not require a crate as he is well behaved when out, even when left home alone for short periods of time and has shown no destructive behaviors. You will likely find him in the same spot sleeping when you return home! Due to his age, his eyes have followed. For his safety, Dallas would do best with a fenced in yard, or a tether, which he currently uses now. He does not pull and when outside he does his business and wants to return to the comfort of being inside. He walks well on a leash but again due to his age, long walks are not his cup of tea. He does need assistance getting in and out of the car with either a ramp or being picked up, which he does not mind at all. While in the car he enjoys looking out the window and taking in the scenery! Senior dogs are often sadly overlooked. But if you are looking for a companion who’s already learned the ropes, Dallas is the perfect match! He is a gentle soul with a heart full of love to give! Dallas will be available for adoption on 8/10/2025 but you can submit your application today pawsacrosspittsburgh/adopt! Paws Across Pittsburgh, Springdale, PA KL #16182

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
