Churro is a 54 pound, under 2 year old Shepherd mix. He is the sweetest pup you will meet . He was returned recently due to no fault of his own. He lived with 3 small children who he loved, but due to him getting bursts of energy and wanting to play with their mini horses, he is back. He is a very smart boy and listens very well, so he will be very easy to train. He really wants to please. And he always comes when called. He had never been walked on a leash, so would get overly excited when seeing dogs out in the wild and had some leash reactivity. He went to a two week training camp where he is now a certified good boy! He did e collar training which he has been very responsive to and now is a pleasure to walk. He will need someone who is dedicated to continuing his training to keep him on track. He loves to snuggle and will happily plop down on your and roll around to get comfortable. And he is total dead weight if you try to move him as he doesn’t want to leave your side. He also loves to run and play. He can play with toys independently or run with his foster sister in the yard. He definitely gets bursts of energy and runs around fast. He would do well with an active owner who enjoys playing, walking him, or taking him on adventures. In the home, he gets along with all the pets. There are three small dogs he’s fine with who ignore him and one doodle mix his size he plays with. We recently had a 7 month old high energy poodle/terrier mix stay for the week and they played nonstop, which can be a bit much. I think something like a fun kitten would be better. There are also two cats and a bunny in the home he is super chill around. He does seem to want to play with the chickens in the coop though. Churro has never met a person he doesn’t like. He absolutely loves everyone. He greets the contractors working here every day and is seen playing tug of war with them, happily wagging his tail. He also loves the pool man when he comes. He’s even great at the vet getting shots. He’s good in the car, but seems a little nervous on rides, which is probably why he lays in place so well. He even takes treats gently. He is such a great dog who will thrive in a home where he is given attention and where he will be given guidance to be the best boy he can be. When he gets his bursts of energy, he is kind of a bull in a china shop, so would do better in a home with older children. Although the 2 year old in his previous home could lay on him as he’s such an easy going guy. He does fine in a kennel and is comfortable sleeping in one. He is also house trained. So if you are looking for a happy go lucky, super awesome, sweet pup who is completely house trained, please apply for Churro. He is waiting for his forever family this time. He deserves it.. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and is microchipped. His adoption fee is $300. All Second Chance Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, are up to date on vaccines and have microchips prior to adoption. Adoption fees vary depending on age of dog. Fees help Second Chance Dog Rescue cover spay/neuter costs, vaccinations, medical treatments, food and supplies. Please go to .secondchancedogrescue and complete an application today! All dogs live in private foster homes until they are adopted.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
