to foster. Unlike the typical high-octane German Shorthaired Pointer, Linus is a more easygoing version of the breed. He enjoys his daily walks, lounging around the house, and keeping close to his people — but he doesn’t need intense exercise or constant activity to be happy. At about 45 pounds and still gaining weight, Linus is housetrained and crate trained. He’s currently getting about a mile of walking each day, split between two outings, which seems to suit him just fine. He does best on walks with a freedom harness, where his leash manners really shine — minimal pulling, pleasant pace. Linus is still learning basic training cues like “sit” and “come,” and he’s eager to please and responds well to gentle, consistent guidance. He’s not a counter surfer and is well-behaved around the home. He enjoys a variety of toys, but what he really loves is spending time with his people — sitting on the couch next to you, hanging out in the backyard, or going for a quiet stroll. He currently stays in the house or in his crate when left alone (usually no more than two hours), and he’s quiet and calm while you’re away. At night, he sleeps peacefully in a crate in the bedroom. Linus gets along with other dogs after a brief, cautious introduction. He may be a little wary at first, then warms up and enjoys playing. He hasn’t had exposure to dogs under 20 pounds, and cats are definitely considered prey in his eyes—so no feline housemates, please. He could also be a bit much for small children, as he can be a little rambunctious and may unintentionally knock them over. This sweet pup took only a couple of days to settle into his foster home. He’s affectionate and loyal once he gets to know you; he can be shy or nervous when approached by unfamiliar people or dogs — especially if they come on too fast. With patience and respectful introductions, Linus does well and starts to feel secure. Linus would do best in a calm, moderately active home that appreciates his gentle pace. A chaotic or very high-energy household likely wouldn’t be the right fit for him. He would thrive with someone who understands that a dog with a sensitive side needs a little time and reassurance to come into his own. If you’re looking for a sweet, lower-key GSP who enjoys companionship without the intensity, Linus might be your perfect match. Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: norcalgsprescue/adoption-questionnaire/ (Please note that we adopt primarily within Northern California and our minimum age for kids is 6) If you'd like to see what Linus's been up to, check out his posting in the Available Foster Dogs section: norcalgsprescue/available-dogs/. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
