e your guy. Zigi is a stunning, “total package”, solid liver German Shorthaired Pointer with a gleaming coat and an even shinier set of pearly whites. We estimate him to be about 2 years old, this young gentleman landed in a foster home, where he was declared “adoptable” right away. He is healthy, house trained, and has been well-behaved right from the start. Zigi is is playful and fun, but not the kind of pup who’s bouncing off the walls. Think more laid-back athlete than wild young GSP. He enjoys activity and loves to engage, but he’s also happy to hang out on the couch. Zigi is sensible, sweet, and (mostly) obedient—an easy-going companion! He loves other dogs and really wants canine companionship—whether that’s a resident dog in the home or the chance to regularly interact and socialize with dog buddies. The best part? Zigi has fantastic dog etiquette. He doesn’t charge in with too much excitement. Instead, he reads the vibe, says hello like a gentleman, and keeps things respectful and friendly. This makes him a great fit for multi-dog households or as a well-mannered guest at the dog park. Life at Home Zigi is house-trained, uses a doggy door, and knows how to settle in the house after play. He’s not a high-maintenance whirlwind, but he does enjoy regular activity. Rather than one long daily session, Zigi does best with several shorter play or walk breaks throughout the day. He’s also got a fun, silly side and still gets the zoomies—usually in the evenings, just to keep life exciting. He’s curious and alert without being hyper. He’s affectionate and wants to be with his person, without being clingy. Zigi approaches the world with a balanced, can-do attitude that makes him a joy to live with. Ideal Home Zigi would thrive in a home with: Another dog to play with or regular dog social time A person or family who appreciates and is willing to put work into a young and active dog A yard for short bursts of play (bonus points for squeaky toys and soft balls) Only older kids and spry adults. Zigi is no delicate flower, and his size and strength may be too much for people who could get knocked over easily We don’t know how he will be around cats, but he has a strong prey drive for birds and even the giant wild turkeys in his current neighborhood. Zigi loves to hike the trails (nose working at all times), go on car rides, or lay at his person’s feet while they work. He is looking for a human that will be very snuggly, physical, and affectionate with him. He loves getting attention from his person. Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: norcalgsprescue/adoption-questionnaire/ (Please note that we adopt primarily within Northern California and our minimum age for kids is 6) If you'd like to see what Zigi's been up to, check out his posting in the Available Foster Dogs section: norcalgsprescue/available-dogs/. That's where you'll find all the latest info about all of our available dogs.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
