Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog. Meet Our Brave Survivor: Sunee! We are excited to introduce Sunee, a resilient and playful 4-month-old German Shepherd who has shown incredible strength and spirit. Th

e name Sunny was given to her at the shelter, so we kept it with a spelling variation. Sunee successfully battled parvo while at the shelter, demonstrating her strong will to thrive even in the face of adversity. Tragically, her littermate did not survive, but Sunee has embraced her new lease on life! And just lost a baby tooth in favor of an incoming adult tooth. After spending time in two temporary foster homes each with three friendly resident shepherds where she has been nothing short of respectful, playful and sweet with them, Sunee is now with her intended foster home where she'll stay until she's adopted. This lovable girl adores people and is eager for all the snuggles and affection she can get. With her gentle nature, Sunee is sure to fill your heart with joy. One of her adorable quirks is her mealtime ritual—she savors her kibble one morsel at a time, taking her time to enjoy each bite. It’s clear she’s going to grow into a big dog, especially with those large paws of hers! Sunee loves toys, especially small balls, and she enjoys napping close to her people. Smart little shepherd, Sunne enjoyed walks with the resident shepherds in her interim foster home for what'll become a daily walk and showed that she's eager to learn new skills although the noisy garage door opening was a new experience. She's also working on sit. Sunee enjoyed her bath shedding shelter life behind and loved being the center of attention on an outing to Poor Reds BBQ. At home, she can be a ball of energy keeping up with the big shepherds and following her people around. Sunee's foster home until she's adopted has a resident shepherd and a very senior cat, the resident shepherd and Sunee have hit it off alternating between playing and napping. We can’t wait to see all the new adventures she will embark on. Our hope is to find the perfect forever home for our survivor girl—a place where she will be treasured, loved, and given all the cuddles she deserves. If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a heart of gold, keep an eye on Sunee! As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always looking for more fosters. Many shepherds in our local shelters require assistance for a fresh start. Would you consider opening your home and sharing a part of your life to help these dogs find new families? You provide the love, and we will take care of everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Please complete this .shepheroes/foster-form, and we will be in touch as soon as possible. We appreciate your consideration. Sunee will thrive in an experienced forever home that is committed to providing her with ongoing environmental exposure, training, and structure, which shepherd puppies need to grow into well-adjusted adult dogs. Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and our new Threads account for plenty of news and updates about our shepherds. Thank you for voting for us as an Animal Nonprofit in Sacramento's Animal Nonprofit Favorites this year! The results will be announced in November and we're excited to have been nominated and getting our name seen to help the shepherds in our care get exposure.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
