family in the tent and going on plenty of hikes. At just 5 months old, Wrigley is a smart and eager learner, thrilled to earn treats as he masters new skills. He's already learned commands like "sit," "down," "with me," "stay," and "watch me." Wrigley is crate trained and potty trained, although he still needs a quick midnight outing. With his big ears that he’s still growing into, Wrigley is truly a gem. His foster family emphasizes good behavior and dedicates time to honing his skills, making him a pleasure to take along on errands and outings. Out in public, Wrigley is a rockstar! He happily greets other dogs and is very friendly with people. He’s completely unfazed by passing bikes and strollers, even checking out boats at the marina. Wrigley is an expert snuggler and is currently learning how to fetch. He resides with one of our alumni shepherds and a female chihuahua mix until he finds his forever home. Wrigley’s siblings—Waterloo (known as Looie), Leuven, Louie, Brussels, and Herstal—are thriving with their adoptive families, and we’d love to find Wrigley a great match as well. Wrigley was initially adopted by a family eager to welcome him into their home. However, their resident five-year-old Rottweiler mix was not accepting of a puppy, which created significant challenges for Wrigley’s integration. It was decided that Wrigley deserves to be in a household where everyone welcomes him, so he returned to his foster family, where he's thriving. Wrigley loves interacting with other dogs, climbing on agility gear, exploring the yard, and getting all wiggly when it’s playtime. During downtime, he enjoys settling in with his toys. We believe Wrigley is a mix of German Shepherd and Malinois, exhibiting a lovely temperament, thanks to his mother. This litter was brought into the care of Foster & Paws, a rescue organization dedicated to helping dogs that end up in shelters while pregnant. Although they focus on dogs in need, they are not breed-specific to shepherd mixes, and we’re committed to finding the best homes for our breed. Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and our newest Threads account, where we post plenty of news and updates about our shepherds. As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. There are many shepherds in our local shelters who require our help for a fresh start. Would you be willing to open your home and share part of your life to help these dogs find new families? You provide the love, and we will provide everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Complete this .shepheroes/foster-form, and we will be in touch as soon as possible. We appreciate your consideration.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
