IA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Petunia and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (09/21) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Falls Church, VA (6100A Arlington Blvd, Falls Church, VA 22044)! Name: Petunia Best Guess for Breed: Terrier/Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 9 years as of September 2025 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 35lbs as of 9/3/25 - she is still a bit underweight at this weight Gets Along With: Other dogs! Petunia also lived with cats in her original home but we don't know how much interaction she had with them - we can discuss integration techniques if you have them. We also haven't seen her with kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters. Currently Living at: DC area foster home. All about Petunia Petunia was very well loved. This sweet girl lived in a South Carolina home with another dog and cats. Then her human went into the hospital and didn't come back out - but no one knew about the animals. By the time Petunia was found and got into the shelter, she was emaciated - only 23 pounds when she should be around 40. The shelter quickly reached out for help and we said YES! Lucky Dog took both Petunia and the other dog. Fransisco was younger, in better shape, and adopted almost immediately. Petunia, being older, needed more help gaining weight - and she also has two bad hips. Lucky Dog is arranging for surgery for those hips too! Petunia got up to 35 pounds (still underweight) and arrived in the DC area in early September. Every human who has met her since then has fallen completely in love with her! She is such a happy, loving pup with so much zest for life. Her long term foster brings her to work with her and her co-workers are absolutely besotted with Petunia. She thrives with all the attention. She melts into any human who is sitting on the floor, trying to be absorbed into their body, giving so many kisses. She's been in a short term foster home where there were three other dogs - 8, 19, and 75 pounds - and her long term foster home has two dogs, one tiny and one medium sized. She has been great with them all - brief polite sniffs when both parties are disinterested, longer friendly sniffs when they want to know more, and has also been good on leashed pack walks. She hasn't chewed on any unauthorized items or showed any other undesirable home behaviors. No accidents in the home. Is great in the car - she goes in and settles in immediately. Sleeps through the night quietly. Loves exploring on sniffy walks. At this time - mid September - Petunia is awaiting her hip surgery. She continues to be eligible for adoption during this time and IF she is adopted, her adopters will need to be committed to ensuring she gets all the care she needs during this time. Whether her surgery and recovery happens in her foster or forever home, all the humans who have met her will be rooting for her! She is a wonderful dog, deserves all the best, and we cannot wait to see her living her best, healthy life with good hips! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $375, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
