ball is the ultimate companion for a family who’s ready to match his energy, affection, and need for structure. Benji thrives on play, especially a game of catch with his favorite small tennis ball. He’s not much for plush toys or chewables, but give him space to run, and you’ll see him zoom with joy across the yard. A fenced yard is a dream come true for this guy, where his bursts of energy can run wild and free. At home, Benji is a model of good behavior. He’s never damaged a single thing, respects boundaries (no furniture jumping here), and prefers a cozy carpet or cool floor over a dog bed. He’s independent when it comes to mealtime, liking his space and privacy while eating. Benji does need to be fed in a private area or he gets cranky; food is serious business for him. Benji is sweet, affectionate, and delightfully intuitive. If you’re ever feeling under the weather or a little low, he’ll be right there to cuddle up and make it better. His original owners often said he seemed destined to be an emotional support or therapy dog (though he’s never had formal training). He loves guests, though don’t be surprised if he makes some noise when he’s separated from the action. This guy loves to be included and assumes every person he meets is there just for him! He loves attention and would be happiest with someone who is home much of the time. He will let you know with his barks if he feels he's lacking in the attention department. Benji does best with a confident, consistent owner who can provide fair, clear structure. He doesn’t need dominance; he needs guidance and reassurance from someone he can trust and respect. With that leadership, he absolutely thrives. He is a good boy that does best when his person sets boundaries with calm confidence. Benji follows commands well and is incredibly well-mannered when it comes to grooming. Baths? No problem. Ear cleaning? He’s a champ. And yes, he loves celebrating his birthday every year on August 23 with a dog-friendly cupcake and a good, long walk to show off his clean curls. His former family hopes his new home will continue this tradition. If you’re looking for a gentle giant with a playful spirit, a big personality, and a whole lot of heart, and you can offer the confident leadership he thrives under, Benji might just be your perfect match. His adoption donation is $210 and includes age-appropriate vaccines, microchip, and neuter. Apply here ➡️ bit.ly/3GDeyyo

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
