x puppy. I was in a kennel far away in Missouri when suddenly, I was lifted up, and there was a lady looking at me with love. I was shocked, surprised, and unsure. She put me in another kennel with my litter mates and off we went. It seemed like I had traveled across the country, but I hadn't, one does have to remember that there are dog years and then there are puppy months, day, minutes. For a puppy, everything just seems to take longer. And then what seemed like no time at all I had a name, Sidney, a collar and a temporary home. Now I'm in a home with my foster mom. When I arrived here the first thing I noticed was that there were other older dogs. I very much want to play, but sadly, they don't. I do know that the resident dogs keep telling me to stay away from their chewies. I figure they must be valuable so I have decided to squirrel away some for myself just in case. I have also come across this thing that has fur, smells different, and makes a noise like nothing I have ever heard. My foster mom says its a cat. I don't really know what to do when it hisses, so I run. I'm a typical puppy in every way. I love to play, explore my new surroundings, and cuddle. I’m not a fan of my kennel, but I will stay in it for a little while before I just can't do it anymore. My foster mom says we need to work on that. Right now, I have a play pen that I sleep in, and I will sleep most of the night. I'm also an expert already on a leash. I enjoy a good walk, and I will just follow you wherever you go. I’m also working on potty training, which is a hit or miss with me, but I feel confident I will master that. I also come when I’m called, so I already know my name my foster mom gave me. Right now, I’m waiting for the day I can go up for adoption and find my forever home. My foster mom says I’m such a love bug that I would be good for anyone. I could go to a home with kids, or a couple that just wants a sweet pup around, or someone who lives alone and wants a friend. Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee:$950.00

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
