Brewer: Brewer gets the zoomies, so walking him is essential every night before bed. He loves to be outside, and takes naps—he's normally asleep for 3-4 hours. He loves toys, especially rubber/sturdier toys and likes to chew on sticks and twigs outside. He is potty trained, he goes to the back door when he needs to use the restroom. He knows sit, paw, stay, eat, up, down, and go to bed. He's also a good walker, doesn't pull or tug. If he gets excited, he may try to get ahead, but 2 little tugs on the leash will make him look at you and will slow him down; when you say “pay attention” he will look up and slow down, so that's a command he knows as well. He's a smart dog, and more training will benefit him. He is very food driven, so treats a necessary. He is crate trained; but I do have to bribe him with a treat, say “go to bed”, and toss the treat in the crate. After that, he's good to go. I put him in his crate at 9pm, and he's good until 7am. He stays outside until he eats at 11am. From there is it's not too hot he'll back outside, or chill in the house with his chew toy. He naps, goes outside again around 4:30, since its shady, and then eats at 7:30pm—we do use a slow feeder cause he will swallow all the food without chewing. I walk him at 7:45 until 8:30, let him outside with water one more time in case he needs to use the restroom before bed. When on walks, take potty bags, cause he'll go at least twice. He loves people, and people seem to love him as well. He likes the pets/rubs behind his ears. He doesn't mind belly rubs, but he won't expose his belly to strangers, so I think he likes the behind the ears sensation more. He's good with other dogs, him and my brother's dog Cassie hang out all day. I will say, Cassie is 8 years old and has “momed” him cause I think she gets annoyed when he has the zoomies. He's really only met older dogs, like 5+ year olds, but I don't see him not getting along with younger dogs, he's very social. When it comes to baths, I shower him every 10 days, or more frequent depending on his dirtiness. He doesn't mind the baths: however, not his favorite, he will try to get out of the tub. I just put him in the water, and he's okay, but when I start wetting him all over, he'll try to get out. Warm water is good and makes him more comfortable, and having a towel ready for right after is important, cause he gets cold. He likes cuddles and being close to you. He'll rub up again you and wait for you to cuddle him. He always falls asleep while cuddling/petting. If you are interested in Brewer, please fill out an application at .tahoewarf and we will arrange a meet and greet with his current owner.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
