works. Virtual meet n greets can be arranged for all non-local adopters. ***URGENT Foster/Adopter Needed ASAP!!!*** Our rescue saved Sassy from euthanisia at an overcrowded high kill shelter in TX. This stunning girl is such a good girl. Sassy, true to her breed, just wants to please everyone! She is only about 1 yr old, still a young thing and is a little reserved. But as with so many of these innocent pups, we really don't know half as much as they've gone through. But our little Sassy can do no wrong! And yes she is little, too little, very underweight. She is food protective, so no doubt she has had to guard what food she had been able to find while trying to survive out there. We really need to find a foster or adopter for this sweetheart ASAP, so she can start to thrive and enjoy life. Please contact Shannon on 919 442 7720 ASAP! (CB) NOTE: Sassy is in a boarding situation, but it still feels like a shelter to her. We need to find a foster or adopter ASAP, so she doesn't succumb to kennel stress. ********** Due to record numbers of owner surrendering pets to shelters, there aren't enough fosters, which means we have to find local boarding kennel space. And if that fails, we need to transport pets to foster homes in other states, or boarding kennels there if we run out of fosters. None of which are ideal but it is better than the alternative. Often now, the shelters are giving rescue groups a lot less than 24 hrs notice of the following day's euthanasia lists! Resulting in everyone scrambling to find fosters or even urgent fosters during that time. Shelters are overflowing in droves mainly due to owner surrenders and/or a general lack of spay/neutering in southern states. Healthy pets that owners, or their families, are surrendering to shelters, especially in southern states, are being euthanised in record numbers. Foster homes are overflowing as a result. If no fosters available, we have to look for space in local boarding kennels and when that fails, our only option is to get these precious innocent pets on transport to other states, either to fosters there, or final resort boarding kennels. And for these pups, boarding is not ideal. Our only hope is to get them into as many foster homes as we can, wherever, until we can get find their furever homes. To apply to adopt, click on .arcadiarescue/application. If the pet you applied for is no longer available, .arcadiarescue/adopt to see all of our available pets. Note: Some pups are in boarding facilities in order to save their lives. This is far from ideal, they really need to be in loving homes. Due to record number owner surrenders this year, we have zero foster homes available. Fostering helps save another pup from euthanasia in an overcrowded kill shelter needing to free up a kennel. If you can foster, go to .arcadiarescue/foster and fill out a foster application. Thank you!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
