n help him find someone that will welcome Rex into their home! Spenser's contact info is down below for anyone potentially interested.... Rex's current owner has provided more information about him below, please read: “Rex is an anxious lover boy who is a big fan of cuddles. He loves to be outside sniffing and soaking up the sun. He also enjoys his naps, where I imagine he chases rabbits and squirrels to his heart's delight. He is very vocal when he plays, which I find adorable. Rex has a moderate-high energy level, depending on the day. In our building, he loves to say hi to everyone, get pets and, of course loves being told he is a good boy. He loves mental stimulation and is very food motivated. His recent favorite treat is a pupsicle, he absolutely loves it! He will chase toys/balls in the apartment, but is too busy sniffing when we are outside to play fetch. Rex would do best in a home with a very stable routine. With proper introductions, I think he may do well in a home with another dog, as we can go to the dog park and he plays well with other dogs. He does not do well with cats. I think he would love a yard to run around and sniff in. I currently live alone, so I am not sure how well he would do with kids. Rex is house-trained and knows basic commands like sit, lay, and we are working on stay. He has separation anxiety which we tried to work on, but with medical school, it just is not feasible for me. I am willing to help contribute to his separation anxiety training financially, and can also put you in touch with the trainer we had planned to work with. He came to me with major leash reactivity to trucks/buses/motorcycles, but after working with a trainer we have gotten that reduced to where he doesn't pull on the leash as much, but just barks and looks to you for treats. He absolutely loves training and working on new skills, you can really tell how excited and happy he gets when he is rewarded and learning. Rex is up to date on all vaccinations and is microchipped. Currently, when going to the vet he is sedated beforehand and then muzzled while they do any procedures/tests. He is muzzle trained with a basket muzzle and does great with it on. He is on sertraline for his anxiety. Feel free to reach out with any other specific questions and I will do my best to answer them! I will of course be able to provide you with all of his toys/dog bed/kennel (rarely used)/treats/food/leashes and current medications, as well as his heart guard and flea & tick medications.” Owners info : Spenser Pfannenstiel spfannenstieluiowa.edu 563-349-8806

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
