BuddyBear Breed: Shih Tzu Age: 7 years old Weight: 15 lbs. House-Trained: Yes Crate-Trained: Yes – but doesn’t prefer it Good with Dogs: Loves other calm dogs and would love a companion! Good with Cats: Has not been tested with cats Good with Kids: Best with calmer, school aged children Energy Level: Low with very small bursts of energy when excited About BuddyBear’s Breed: The Shih Tzu is a small dog with a royal past and a heart full of love. Known as the “little lion,” this breed is anything but fierce—more like a snuggly lap warmer with a flair for charm. Shih Tzus are affectionate and loyal and have a playful yet calm personality. They can live up to 16 years – which means BuddyBear has a lot of life left in him even if he’s considered a senior! Shih Tzus do require more grooming care but shed less around the home. Shih Tzus are the ultimate companion dogs—loving, loyal, and always ready to curl up beside you. About BuddyBear: BuddyBear is the definition of a gentle soul. This sweet senior is house trained, has excellent manners, and sleeps peacefully through the night in his cozy bed. While he’s crate trained and will settle in when needed, he’d much rather be near his person—he’s happiest when he’s part of the family, soaking up affection and companionship. BuddyBear’s Favorite Things: • Lounging on the back deck in the sunshine • Snuggling with his humans or calm doggie friends • Playing with his stuffed toys • Exploring the yard with curiosity and joy • Showing off his adorable energy bursts—especially at dinnertime! Special Care Needs: BuddyBear has limited vision due to mild eye scleritis and corneal pigmentation, and he’s recovering from ear infections—so he’ll need life long daily eye medication (Optimmune) and weekly ear cleanings. He’s also bounced back beautifully from a successful surgery to remove a non-cancerous abdominal mass. Despite these needs, he’s a low-maintenance guy who just wants to be loved. BuddyBear’s Ideal Home: BuddyBear would thrive in an adult-only home or one with gentle, older children. He’d love a laid-back doggie companion and a human who’s committed to his ongoing care. In return, he’ll offer endless cuddles, quiet companionship, and the kind of love only a senior dog can give. If you’re looking for a mellow, affectionate pup who’ll be your sunshine and snuggle buddy, BuddyBear is ready to fill your home with warmth and tail wags! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
