and I am sure happy about that. I needed bloodwork when I arrived and I've had that now, thanks to a generous grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization! I’m grateful for the good care that I’m getting and the love from my wonderful foster family while I wait for my hospice family to find me. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I’ve done well with the dogs I’ve met in my foster’s neighborhood, keeping interactions calm and simple. I’m mostly just curious about them, so if you have a gentle pup who will understand my limited vision and hearing and will be kind to me, let’s meet! / Cats unknown. / I haven’t met kids yet, so if you have kids that are old enough to be very gentle with me, let’s meet and no toddlers that may fall on me or very young children. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I may be an old gentleman, but I’ve still got plenty of love to give. My foster says that I have the sweetest disposition and that I like nothing more than quietly following my person around the house before settling in for one of my many cozy naps. Since my vision is limited and I don’t always hear everything, I do need a little extra help — like being carried up and down stairs and having those areas blocked off so I stay safe. I don’t mind though, because it just means I get to be close to you. I’m a gentle soul who wants nothing more than to spend my golden days surrounded by love, comfort, and kindness. / Energy level: 1-3. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I don’t really know any commands, and since I’m a senior fellow, I think we can skip the training and just enjoy each other’s company! / I’ve been fine in my crate and my foster recently started letting me stay in the bathroom with a baby gate, my bed and a pee pad just in case. I haven’t needed the pee pad, but it’s there in case. / My foster takes me out on a good schedule, and I do well with that. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I’m a gentle little love bug who feels happiest just being close to my person. These days, I do a lot of snoozing, and my favorite spot is curled up on the floor right beside your feet while you relax on the couch. I adore hugs and kisses (I get smooches all the time and don’t mind one bit), and I enjoy taking short little sniffing adventures outside on my leash. / I can’t think of any dislikes, though I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and good care. • MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and neutered. All my teeth are gone, so I eat soft food with water mixed in it to make it soupy, as I have an oronasal fistula (small opening between my mouth and nose), but it doesn’t stop me from being happy and enjoying life. I also have a grade 2 heart murmur that doesn't need medication currently, but I do eat a special canned diet that is good for me. I’ve got some old man lumps and bumps that don’t bother me as well. If you have a love for taking care of sweet hospice dogs, and want to give me a good, relaxed rest of my life, then let’s meet. My adoption fee is $100.00 and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
