people, I love meeting them so much that I just want to get as close as possible and may jump a little just so you know how much I want to be around you. My foster mom says we are working on this, and I am learning not to jump but my next family should be prepared to work on this with me! I am so excited and happy it’s hard for me to contain it. I LOVE playing with other dogs and will run and play for hours if allowed. I live with a newfoundland and a shepherd mix and we all like to play together in the mornings and evenings after our meals. I also love a good chew toy or yummy bone! One really good thing about me is that I am potty trained and my previous owner allowed me free roam of the house! Just make sure any shoes or appealing chewy things are put away. My foster mom is working on kennel training with me as well in case my new family would like me to be in a kennel during certain times. I am a little bit whiney in the kennel but am learning to adjust! I currently live with cats and dogs, and my human foster mom and dad. Although I do not live with kids, I am sure I would love them as long as I am supervised as I may jump on small ones and knock them over accidentally. I did come from a “breeder” originally so it is 100% known that I am half newfoundland and half golden retriever, and I definitely have the golden retriever personality! I will be a big boy full grown (Newfoundlands are usually 100+ pounds) so please know that if you are interested in me becoming a part of your family. I would greatly benefit from obedience training and all the fun things that come with being a puppy (socializing, leash training, etc). Please fill out an adoption application if you are interested in meeting me and seeing if we are a good fit! Beau is an owner surrender. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page. *Rescue puppies are notorious for losing their birth certificates before entering our rescue. We cannot guarantee the breed or size they will be full grown.* If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
