ves With: Dogs, cats and people! Housebroken? She’s working on her potty training and making great progress! Story: Avril was rescued from a shelter in Alabama. We are so happy to have her safe and sound in a foster home in the DC area now. Avril is a happy sweetie who loves people and gets along great with other dogs and puppies. She knows just how to get comfortable up on the couch with her humans, and will love to join you on walks and trots around the neighborhood. Avril is just looking for someone to be her new best furend and we know that she will repay them with endless amounts of love and tail wags. Like all dogs, Avril will need an adopter who is committed to setting her up for success by enrolling in obedience training and exercising her both mentally and physically. She will also need love, patience, and socialization in order to thrive! What my foster says: Avvy or Avril is a shy sweetie. She loves being around our dog, Bane. Like attached at the hip— she should definitely go to a home with another dog. That said, she’s very chill, especially for a puppy! She will relax and lay in her crate if it’s open, or jump up on the couch and snuggle next to him if it’s not. Very low-energy (for now) and a super easy puppy. Potty training is going well and Avril does REALLY well going outside (I think she just prefers pottying outside). She will have occasional accidents inside (it’s been a while now!) but that’s almost always been our fault for not letting her out immediately in the morning or right after mealtime. She enjoys walks when she has Bane with her. She’s made a lot of progress on the leash and even gets excited when she sees her leash now. Bane heels well when told, and she follows his lead and hangs back when he’s in a heel, so that helps a lot. We feel comfortable leaving shoes and stuff on the ground because she literally doesn’t chew anything (she’s an amazing puppy!!). However, she did recently start trying to chew on like the edge of my desk, for example, while I’m working, but stopped when I told her no. I took that as a positive sign that she’s getting more comfortable and is acting like a regular puppy— but happy she corrected when told no! Other than that, no chewing of shoes or anything. Finally, just want to recap on her temperament. While she can be generally nervous and skittish, she’s extremely non-aggressive, even around food. She never bites or snaps, even when we are doing something she’s not comfortable with (like picking her up). Because of that, I think she would do just fine in a home with young children. She will be an amazing, sweet dog once we help her get more comfortable, confident, and trusting of people! It just takes time and patience and she’s making great progress!! The fee to adopt Avril is $475. That covers the cost of all her vaccines, her spay, the collar she’s wearing, her transport to DC and her care in her foster home. She’s up to date on all age appropriate vaccines. If you think that Avril might be your perfect match, apply today!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
