conditions and apparently just existing for approximately 2 years. While I want to spare too many details, it is important to make everyone aware of what George had to endure. He was being starved living off of rare portions of table scraps (when he was allowed to eat at all). They had basically NO shelter from the elements. What little water he had was muddy and not drinkable. He attempted to get water off of a small tin roof when it rained that barely covered his living area (which was chained to a post and unable to move past approximately 5 feet). George would be punched and kicked by the kids of the family. He was severely under weight. We had to think fast and come up with a plan to get him out of this environment. We were able to convince the owners to turn George over to us. Fast forward to today and you are looking at one of the most affectionate, healthy animals who just loves to be loved on. We were unable to house George primarily because we did not have a large enough house or yard (along with 5 cats). We were put in contact with an absolutely wonderful, caring couple who was aware of what was going on with George. They agreed to foster George in a great area as shown in the photos until we could get him fattened up and healthy. He has a great outdoor house in a large fenced in area with plenty of room to roam. George is leash trained and crate trained. We walk them often. George has been neutered and is up to date on vaccines and dewormed. George is 3 years old and is part Bernese Mountain and St. Bernard mix weighing about 115 lbs. but he is a loving, affectionate and intelligent 115 lbs. George would be GREAT on farm or similar environment. The current fosters are having severe health issues that is making it difficult for them to keep and maintain George's upkeep and we are not having any luck finding a forever home in the Hickory or surrounding NC area. Because of what he has been through, we vet and verify any potential new owners. George deserves the very best! **** Breed: St Bernard-Great Bernese Mountain mix **** Pet Link: .nokillnetwork/adoption/pet_detail.php?petid=2188090&flag=1

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
