since the moment we laid eyes on you and our love for you has only grown since. You came to us as a poor pup with mange and a bad case of heartworms looking pathetic and kinda gross and look at you now! Your fur is shiny, your skin is healed, and we killed off all those darn worms with treatment. We helped you lose some weight that was being hard on your heart, and you are now as adorable as can be. You love the other dogs in your foster home as long as they know that you are the real boss of the house! The kitties are especially fun, and you really like to sit on them. What great soft, warm pillows they make. You have the attitude of a princess but with some serious sass. You have the funniest little dance and are so incredibly excited to see the people you love. Making a nest in a pile of blankets and pillows on the couch is the best but you are ok to take long naps in a fuzzy bed in your kennel too. You are most certainly not a morning girl and would prefer breakfast in bed prior to going out into the out! Oh, and try as you do sometimes you are not so perfect at potty training because you know... it's too cold, or rainy or the wind might be blowing more than 4 miles per hour! LOL! But on a sunny day oh how you love to bask in the sun beams. You love to wear your sweaters when it's a tad chilly and you know how good you look too. Car rides are fun, and we bet you would love to go on stroller walks. While you haven't had the chance to meet many kids, we think you would like them cuz they probably have snacks!!! But only so long as they are gentle with you and never try to pick you up and carry you around because you do get awfully wiggly and could break one of your little leggies if dropped. And while we love you so very much we think you will be an absolute wonderful friend for the right home and we cannot wait to see you be the princess/boss of your very own domain because you know your foster sister is the real boss of your foster home and she's only been indulging you since you were such a pathetic little thing when you first came! So let's see, you are heartworm free now (but MUST stay on heartworm medication!), spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. We think you are about 5 years old and while worth a million bucks your adoption fee is only $300.00 which we know you are cheap at twice the price!!!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
