ssie girl found herself alone and confused on a county road near a park. She had been reported as something is wrong with her and she had been sitting in the same spot for 3 days before we were contacted to see if she needed help. One of our volunteers drove out to the spot she was at and at first she was reluctant to leave 'her spot' which is pretty typical of a dog that has been abandoned but a slip lead, a few treats and a little coaxing in a soft voice from a gentle dog savvy human and she was loaded up headed for the shelter. Once at the shelter we quickly assessed that the thing that was visibly wrong was a significant case of flea dermatitis. Ok, cool...we can fix that easy. The rest of what was wrong took a little more time. She exhibited all the signals of a dumped dog. She was sad. Shut down. Confused but very congenial in doing what we asked of her. She even walked right alongside us into and out of her kennel to a grassy spot in the shade and would wait for us to come back to get her in which she would walk calmly back to her kennel, sit in front of it and wait to have her leash undone and with out even a glance just go lay down again. So her physical issues we could fix with some meds, a good bath and nutrition....her broken heart and spirit would require a little more. That little more came in the form of a foster home! Arcen had stolen the heart of her rescuer and her daughter had stolen the heart of Arcen so they took her home for the week end just to see if they could bring her out of her funk and spark some joy. Arcen came around quickly in the positive environment of a temp foster home and has continued to blossom in her current foster. This is what her foster has to say about this little girl....She is a delight! Full of energy for a tennis ball and a frisbee. Her favorite activity is running alongside my bike. The faster, the better. She’s great with all cats and children. Her hair is coming in lushly. She is an ideal dog for a child as she loves kids! An active family that wants to engage her with play would be best. She adores snuggling, seems to be a great watchdog as she only barks when someone comes to the door or a stranger approaches our property. She is completely house trained and can go at least six hours without going out for a potty break. She may go longer but I haven’t tried it. When she comes in the door, she waits for me to wipe her feet. She sits and shakes on command. If I were younger I’d keep her in a heartbeat! She does shed some but it just falls to the floor rather than attaching to clothing and furniture. She will get in the wastebasket if you don’t put it up at night but she is also very young and would surely outgrow this. We estimate her to be just over a year old. She is spayed, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $300.00

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
