rs old. He is 40lbs. Hootie's previous owner moved to Chicago, which proved overwhelming for him. As an already fearful dog, he struggled to adapt to the traffic, loud horns, and fast-paced city life, making walks nearly impossible. When Hootie first came to us, we intended to put him up for adoption immediately. However, he was so scared that we decided to wait. Although he is still a fearful dog, he has become comfortable with us. Hootie truly needs a forever home where he can receive the love and attention he craves. He sleeps with his foster at night and is house-trained. Our sanctuary dogs live in foster homes, and while he gets affection here, he has to share it with the other dogs. Hootie would thrive with his own human. He is a sweet, loving boy who enjoys keeping you company. Once he gets to know you, he will often lie next to you or even try to get onto your lap. While he is good with other dogs, he rarely plays; he simply seeks human companionship. Hootie often lies under his foster's desk while she works, always wanting to be by her side. It’s important to note that Hootie will be extremely scared when transitioning to a new home. During his initial adjustment, which may take a couple of weeks, he may hide from unfamiliar faces and loud noises. He is available through our Foster to Adopt Program and needs someone who will be home during the day. Hootie is not a social butterfly; he is a homebody. If you travel or go on vacations, he cannot be boarded or taken along; a dog sitter would need to come to your home. Hootie thrives in a calm environment and would do best in a home with one or two people, without much activity. Ideally, a home with no small children and no other dogs would be best, although he may adjust to a home with teenagers. When there are visitors, he will often go and hide until he feels comfortable around them. He does not bite or growl; he is very submissive and simply frightened by new situations and people. Hootie requires a secure, fenced-in yard and would benefit from living with a healthy, active retired couple, as he has the potential to live another 10-12 years. His new family should live no more than an hour away from Northwest Indiana. We would like you to come and meet Hootie, and if the initial meeting goes well, we will bring him to your home for visit so he can get to know you better. We are not in a rush to find him a home; our priority is finding the right fit for him. Hootie’s adoption fee is $100. He is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
