found tied up to a porch pole with no way to move and no food or water. She was purposely abandoned at an empty house. Thankfully a former 4LD adopter found her, untied her, and gave her water, food, and a bath. He then called 4 Lucky Dogs to help. 4LD worked with the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center to see if we could find her owner but were unsuccessful. So Chelley (as we named her) is now looking for a forever home. We do not know Chelley’s backstory but can tell she has lived in a house before because of her familiarity with laps, sofas, dog beds, toys, and leash walking. We can also tell she is appreciative of being at home (foster house) again after being tied up. Some words to describe her are energetic, outgoing, spunky, affectionate, and very adaptable. Her foster family’s favorite thing about Chelley…. as soon as a person approaches Chelley gets down on her back and rolls over for a belly rub. HAPPY DOG – YES Chelley is an “everyone” type of dog equally loving all members of her foster family (mom, dad, child, etc.). This dog is friendly to each person wagging her tail as someone walks by her or giving a greeting by getting up on her hind legs. Even people she just met get a huge greeting from her. And Chelley enjoys being told that she is a “good girl” wagging her tail even more. GREAT ATTITUDE – YES Chelley’s goal is to be where the action is whether it is in a specific room in the foster home or the kitchen where food is prepared or under the eating table when a meal is going on (hoping for something to drop!). She may try doing something wrong like putting her front paws on the kitchen counter, but the second time she is told “no” she looks guilty and will stop. The fosters are guessing she is thinking “darn I got caught again but it was fun trying”. PLAYFUL – YES Toys are a must for Chelley. She likes playing with stuffed animals or putting them beside her in a dog bed. She also likes stealing socks! Running or exploring in the backyard is also one of her favorite things to do. LEASH WALKER – YES Chelley gets excited when her leash is picked up and runs to the door. She is so excited that she tends to pull when walking, but the foster family found out she is trainable listening to commands like “stop”. And if the person wants to walk faster or run a little Chelley is willing to pick up the pace too. DOG COMPATIBLE – YES She loves playing with other dogs. Chelley is still puppy-like so she considers every dog or person she meets as her friend. Her ideal living situation is as a companion for another dog constantly playing and hanging out with him/her. At her foster home they see Chelley get down on her front paw asking the other dog “ready?”. If adopter does have another dog(s) it would be best if that dog is around the same age and as playful because Chelley will want to constantly interact with that dog and older dogs may get irritated. Chelley would be fine living as an only dog if an owner plays with her regularly and keeps her active. Then in Chelley’s free time she will keep herself entertained with toys. LOYAL COMPANION – YES Chelley will be at your feet so watch out! You turn around and there she is ready to see what you are doing. While the foster mother is working on the computer, she will lay quietly on the dog bed but when she sees her get up she gets up too ready to do whatever is next Chelley also likes her foster dad and visits him frequently in his “man-cave” wanting to be on his lap or to see what he is eating. POTTY TRAINED – WORKING ON IT Chelley is about 50% potty trained. She will go to the bathroom outside if she is taken out regularly and then praised for it. But she does have accidents in the house because sometimes she needs to go right away. The adopter will need to continue with Chelley’s potty training especially since it will be a new environment for her. READY TO BE PART OF YOUR FAMILY – YES Chelley’s adoption fee is $620. This dog comes up to date on all necessary vaccines/rabies shots, heartworm tested being negative, microchipped, and spayed. She is currently being fostered in the Plant City/Valrico Florida area. The average lifespan for this breed is 14 years; therefore, Chelley’s adopter will need to be prepared to keep her for around 13 more years so she will not have to move to a different home again. ------------- ***We are a foster-based rescue with no shelter or facility to view our dogs, and our address is a mailing address only. Please be patient as we are an all-volunteer rescue, and our rescue dogs are in various loving foster homes throughout West-Central Florida. As a general rule we try to limit our adoptions to within the state of FL. If interested in one of our dogs, please fill out a foster or adopt application at .4luckydogs, and we will contact you by phone/text if we feel your application is the best fit out of the ones received.***

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
