side with a heart full of love and a sense of humor that could make even the grumpiest cat crack a smile! I spent the first few years of my life with a couple of not so nice humans that left me in a cage all day (they are more suited for that type of living environment than me, but I digress). Thankfully, Treat Dealer A.K.A. T.D....my foster mom.... convinced them to let me crash at her place. Who knew being a dog was supposed to be this much fun?!?!?! Other than getting neutered, having all those shots, and the vampire lady taking some blood, I have been living a pretty good life. I get to go on walkies and do a ton of sniffies (one of my favorite games is called find-it). I sleep in bed with T.D., have learned so many human words, and met a lot of great people. I’m a really friendly guy, but sometimes I get sooo excited, that T.D. feels the need to tell people I can come in a little hot. Whatever that means. It’s not like I’m sniffing these humans’ butts, I just like to get up close and personal so they know I am friendly. And also, I love to be loved on. Sometimes I get to run, play and do sniffies without my leash, and that is my absolute favorite activity! Well, that and showing off new tricks when T.D. has a pocket full of the goods. What I’m Looking For - Although I have learned that love can heal even the biggest scars, I need a patient and understanding human/family who knows I may need a little time to fully settle in—but once I do, you will have a lifetime supply of my goofy, affectionate nature. -I wouldn’t mind a furry friend and/or a smaller human to hang out with too. I hear those tweens are a good time. Basically, anyone that enjoys cuddles, playtime, and the occasional shenanigans—because life is too short not to be silly. Extra bonus points if you have a sense of humor and love to give belly rubs. - Having a yard would be a dream come true. I would love to explore every nook and cranny! There could be hidden treasures like sticks, leaves, and maybe even some sneaky squirrels to watch. Play some fetch and let the occasional compulsory zoomie take over my body. Pretty sure my tail could be used as a windmill just thinking about all the great adventures we would have in our very own yard! >>>Hi everyone, T.D. here....Just wanted to pop on to give a little more info. on Max. There is so much I could say about this sweet, brave, resilient pup, but I will try to keep my “about Max” more informative. Max, as you already know, and since he felt compelled to mention it as his least favorite part of our journey together, is neutered, up to date on shots, and received a clean bill of health. He was also microchipped when he was getting neutered, but since he was under the influence during both, I thought it would be best if we never discuss that day again. Max is a three and ½ year old presumably American Staffordshire/Golden Retriever mix. I can confirm that Max did not have a great start to life, but despite that, he does not have an aggressive bone in his body. He does come in a little hot, when meeting new people, but in more of an excited, nice to sniff/meet you way. When Max came to “crash with me”, I knew I wasn’t just offering up my couch, bed, etc. I was giving him a place to decompress, feel loved and nurtured, provide structure, and teach him that sometimes you need to just let go and trust. I always knew it would be temporary, I was preparing him to live the life he always deserved to live, while dispensing treats, obviously. I knew he was always destined to move on in order to live his very best life. Unfortunately, I can’t provide him with all the things I know he would love and is so deserving of. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be his first real home, and I am grateful to Max for making me a better human. If you are looking for a sweet, goofy, lovable, handsome guy that will change your life for the best, stop looking, you’ve found him. Just make sure to have plenty of treats, and it will be love at first sniff. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
