ve!! SELMA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Selma and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (October 6th) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Alexandria, VA (3351 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22305)! Name: Selma Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd/Boxer Mix Best Guess for Age: 5 months as of September 2025 SEX: Female Estimated Weight (puppies' weights change quickly!): 32lbs as of 9/14 Gets Along With: Most puppies are in the prime of their socialization window and will do well with other dogs, cats and kids so long as they receive patience and proper training. Currently Living at: DC area foster home. Check out Selma's adventures in foster care on Instagram: maisysfostering! Special Adoption Considerations: Puppies under 6 months of age need to have multiple potty breaks/exercise throughout the day. Potential adopters with a standard 8-hour workday must be willing to make arrangements to meet the needs of their puppy. Selma is Looking For: Hi, I’m Selma! I’m a 5-month-old puppy with a big heart and even bigger dreams for my forever home. I picture a cozy bed to curl up on, fun walks where I can sniff all the good smells, and plenty of playtime with humans who love tug and fetch as much as I do. I’d love a family who’s patient and ready to help me learn my puppy manners—I promise I’m a quick study! Belly rubs, treats, and snuggles are at the top of my wish list too, and if I get a doggy sibling or some kids to play with, that would be the icing on the cake. In return, I’ll give you endless love, goofy puppy smiles, and a tail that never stops wagging. What My Foster Says About Me: Selma is the sweetest, goofiest, springiest, happiest girl ever. She truly loves people, dogs, and life itself!! She loves my dog but also backs away when my dog has had her fill of kisses. She's really great at the dog park and takes cues really well. She's super submissive and will match the energy of the dog she's playing with. Her back legs are actually springs and she is an excellent jumper, but she's already so much better about sitting for attention rather than jumping. She knows she gets her meals in the crate so as soon as she hears the kibble she starts running back and forth between me and the crate waiting. She has done well in the crate at night and sleeps until she hears me walking over to the crate and then her tail goes crazy as she waits to greet me with millions of kisses. Selma is really the happiest puppy and she's going to be a really great dog for any family. She definitely benefits from multiple walks and at least one trip to the dog park each day (we do two) to continue building her confidence and give her the opportunity to burn off some energy. I really love her and her chaos but I can't wait for her to find her forever family. Your new puppy will need to work on their house training and will also need to go to obedience school so they can grow into a well-socialized dog! TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this puppy is $485, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
