0lbs. Calm and brave and loves her person/people. She will not complain sitting with you in your chair or snuggling into your arm when you lay down in bed. How lucky! If you get to be her new person. She was rescued from a situation where she was kept caged and in an outside pen without much interaction. Due to this, Kirby should NOT be crated. But, she doesn’t need to be. She’s never chewed anything that wasn’t her own toys. Since August she has had a lot of firsts: Riding in cars including a multi-day roadtrip, vet care, grooming, going down stairs, meeting a ton of new people, walking on leash, swimming in the pool, playing fletch, eating out at restaurants, chewing up toys :-), trying all sorts of new treats and being loved every minute of every day. She’s never had that. She is reserved with new people but with time she becomes the best cuddle buddy. Her new family will need to be patient and give lots of support when she first comes home. She is scared of loud noises like fireworks and loud motorcycles and she will need help working through separation anxiety. It’s about the only time she barks. Foster mom thinks that a medium energy home with people who are with her most of the day would be best. If there are other dog friends around that’s even better. She likes kids, but hasn’t been around them much. Cats are overly interesting right now but foster mom thinks that could be curbed with proper introductions and obedience training. She is great with dogs of all ages and sizes. She is not jumpy, and has a cute little howl when she gets excited. We are working on potty training. She is about 70% there but still a work in progress. Kirby’s only lasting medical issue from her old life is chronic dry eye that went untreated until she was rescued. She will require drops in her eyes for the rest of her life. About $35 every 2 months through Chewy. She is good about getting the drops. She is spayed and heart-worm negative. Kirby knows her name and comes to it well but she would benefit from going to obedience classes. She needs to learn basic commands. It will help her bond with her new family as well as get more exposure to new people and new places. She is not a runner, but she will wander if left alone. She went without regular meals most of her life so she will always come for food shaken in a bowl. She gets super excited at meal times. (In a cute way). In short, Kirby had a rough first 3 years but doesn’t let that hold her back. She is experiencing life and building confidence every day and is eager to keep learning. Her foster mom loves her and can answer any other questions. ************************************************************************ The adoption fee is $400, which covers food, vetting, microchip and the spay/neuter surgery performed by a rescue-affiliated vet. All dogs receive a wellness visit and are up to date on shots appropriate for age. Breed and size is Pawfect Match Rescue's best guess and not guaranteed. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
