e may be a Chiweenie) approximately 11 pounds and one year old. She travels very well in a travel crate or carrier and I think would make a good RV dog. She loves to fetch and play tug with her foster sister. She has energy and will get the zoomies, want to play, and run, and also has an off switch and can be quiet for hours. She is smart and easily bored, so games and interactions are important. However, she would do best in an adults only home. She wants to be your heart dog, to sleep by your side, and under the covers, like a cat. She wants to sleep on your lap or rest on your chest to keep you warm. She doesn’t like to be left in a crate without a human in the home, but can do it with minimal crying. She can sleep through the night without accidents and will poo outside. Peeing is still a bit of a challenge because she wants to be with her person, so at this point, you have to be outside, too. I think she would adjust to using a pee pad very quickly, if that is a preference. Her Chihuahua side has a built-in alert system and will let you know when strangers are getting close. She currently is shy and afraid of things outside of the house and yard, though quickly getting accustomed to the sound of people walking on the sidewalk at the fence. She is great in a collar and harness, however still needs to learn leash manners. She is afraid of people and dogs when we go for walks and will bark and growl. She is quieting down when we play stranger/treat games. She is good when she meets one dog at a time (off leash) and is slow to warm up to other dogs. However, she and my dog became friends after about a week. Poppy is an adorable dog and will make a great companion. Grateful Dogs Rescue incurs substantial veterinary and other expenses in rescuing our dogs. In order to recoup some of these costs, we request a tax-deductible donation for each adoption. The suggested donation for Poppy is $300. If you are interested in adopting Poppy, please complete our online adoption application at .gratefuldogsrescue/adoption-process/ . One of our volunteers will get back to you. Adoptions are local, confined to the SF Bay Area. See our other available dogs at .gratefuldogsrescue/available-dogs/

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
