Foster Home Feedback 10/21/25 Foster Feedback:Madame Leotta (Lettie) attended the Unglued Fall festival and was such a brave girl at the adoption event! While she was a little cautious at first, she warmed up quickly and was happy to meet new people and soak up gentle pets. Every day she continues to come out of her shell a little more and show her sweet, goofy personality. She’s growing in confidence, especially when she has a friendly dog buddy to follow. Lettie is still a bit skittish at times, but she’s making steady progress and clearly wants to connect. She’s a smart cookie who has learned lots of tricks already and is very treat-motivated—she loves to learn! At home, Lettie is respectful of the resident cats and wonderful with our older kids. She’s the perfect mix of gentle, curious, and eager to please. Watching her blossom has been such a joy! 10/10/25 Foster Feedback: Madame Leota (aka Lettie) is a brindle beauty with a heart of gold and a gentle soul. She’s learning that the world isn’t so scary, and every day she grows more confident and curious. Once she feels safe, her affectionate, goofy side shines through — and she’ll melt right into you on the couch. Madame Leota does fantastic on walks, staying calm and curious about the world around her. She’s getting along great with the other dogs, respects the cats, and has done beautifully with older kids in the home. She is smart, eager to please, and very treat motivated — training with her is a joy. She gets especially excited at mealtime, so we’re working on slowing down and minding manners around food. She’s been picking up routines quickly, doing well with crate time and house training, and is showing that she’s happiest when she can be near her people. Madame Leota thrives with gentle guidance and a calm environment — once she trusts you, she’s the kind of dog who will quietly follow you everywhere, offering soft eyes and an even softer heart. Best fit: A home that gives her time to settle, a consistent routine, and plenty of love. In return, you’ll have a loyal, soulful companion who just needed someone to see the magic in her brindle stripes. 9/18/25 Volunteer Feedback: Madame Leota is a darling! Her quirky personality is only enhanced by her beautiful brindle coat. She is quiet and reserved at first, but she quickly warms up with some treats and scratches. Although she is very inquisitive about all the sights and smells, she is an absolute pleasure to walk with. Leota hardly pulls, has no reaction to people/bikers/kids/other dogs, frequently checks in, and can easily be prompted into a heel position with a treat. This gorgeous lady is very treat-motivated and would quickly learn any kind of trick! In the car, she would benefit from being kenneled, since she tends to move around to every possible seat. Otherwise, she quietly appreciates the great view! Madame Leota is a relatively quiet dog and did not bark until she was returned to her kennel. Overall, she is a well-behaved, eager-to-please sweetheart. She would be a wonderful fit for a home that would fill her life with cuddles, long walks, and plenty of pup cups! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
