bright spirit that makes you smile. Hops right into the car, ready for adventure! Kennel Carla: Stressed. Barks and growls at passing people and dogs and fixates on her food. May be guarding her kennel and toys. Unfortunately, Kennel Carla makes it difficult for Carla to be walked at the shelter. She is STRESSED and needs more time to be Out Carla! We are looking for a patient, savvy adopter or foster to whisk Carla away from doggie prison and home with you! While kennel stress is a gnarly thing, we aren’t sure yet if Kennel Carla will be an ongoing guest star in Carla’s life. She does seem to protect her toys outside the kennel too, but will happily trade for a treat! Someone open to giving her time to decompress and working with her if so is a must. Adopters: come visit at 600 Aviation Drive, Camarillo CA Fosters: please apply at vcas.us/foster, and email vcar.fosterventura to let us know you are specifically interested in Carla! vcanimalservices Adopter or foster needed for Carla - we’re still trying to figure this girl out! Tiny but mighty Carla has been challenging for VCAS staff and volunteers. In her kennel, Carla often barks, growls, and bites at the leash, which makes it difficult for her to spend much time outside or connect with potential adopters. Once out of the kennel, we saw lots of positive behavior from Carla! On a walk with a staff member she was curious and alert, but didn’t react to people or loud noises. We look it slow, but she was eager to accept treats from multiple people, allowed herself to be pet all over, came right up to have a collar put on, and eventually curled up and fell asleep in the office like a good girl. ?? She seems to have such a fun and curious spirit, and a desire to explore! She hops right up into the car, ready for adventures. We think stress or frustration MAY be driving much of her kennel behavior, but it’s difficult for us to assess definitively in this environment. One thing is clear… the shelter is not a good place for her. Can you help us learn more about Carla in a home? She’s looking for a place with no kids and separate from other animals for now as we evaluate her needs. Fosters should be comfortable handling her behavior and making daily, detailed observations. An adopter will need to give Carla time and space to decompress, and potentially helping her deal with stranger danger or reactivity down the line if they persist! Perhaps you have a passion for spicy but sweet littles? Come visit Carla at 600 Aviation Drive, Camarillo CA. Any interested fosters should apply at vcas.us/foster, and email vcar.fosterventura to let us know you are specifically interested in fostering Carla A871608 ?? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
