d and is a wiggly girl who loves with her whole heart. She bonds quickly with people and is the type of dog who always wants to be touching you when on the couch together. She adores cuddle time and is happiest when she can be included in all things fun. Kira appears to be mostly full-grown and is a petite girl weighing only 29lbs. Kira came to us from a Northern California shelter after she was found as a stray and wasn't claimed by a family. Due to overcrowding at the shelter, she was at risk of euthanasia, and we were happy to be able to step in and save her. She definitely acts like she has been in a home before, and she has settled in well to life in her foster home. Kira is such an affectionate girl who will woo you by lovingly looking into your eyes and making herself comfy in your lap. While she can be a little suspicious when she meets new people, she is quick to warm up and then will be your BFF for life. She is a playful girl who loves to play fetch and tug. She is also a big fan of zooming around the yard and being goofy. She would love an active family who can keep up with her puppy energy. She recently went on a camping trip with his foster parents and did great out in the wilderness. She seems to already know stuff like sit and paw, and is overall a well-mannered girl at home (although she may try to sneakily chew on your shoes). Kira doesn't seem to have been well socialized with being out and about, and is working with a trainer on her reactivity. She needs a family who can continue her training to help her thrive. Kira loved hanging out with other playful dogs at the shelter, but has been more than happy to be an only dog in her foster home. Kira needs a kitty-free home. Kira has done great in a home with teenagers and could be a wonderful addition to a home with kids over 12 years old. Kira is house and crate trained. She is content to hang out in her crate during the work day and loves seeing her daily dog walkers for midday playtime and cuddles. She does well sleeping through the night in her crate, but would have no problem joining you in bed if you let her. Kira is such an amazing girl who deserves a family just as great as her. If she sounds like the lovebug you need in your life, submit an application today! Kira's adoption fee is $300. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations before adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
