ew people, but once she feels safe, her sweet and goofy personality shines through. It only takes some time and patience before she’s ready to curl up across your lap, doze off by your side, or settle on the couch gazing out the window. She’ll happily alert you to visitors or passersby, but otherwise she’s a calm and easy companion around the house. Bambi is very food motivated, which makes training fun—she’ll often race ahead and sit before you’ve even given a cue, just to earn her reward. Bread is her all-time favorite treat (she acts like it’s a five-star steak dinner!), and she’s got impressive skills when it comes to catching treats midair. She also adores her walks and is overjoyed when she sees the leash come out, though one good walk a day is plenty for her. After that, she’s content to nap or lounge. She’s got some adorable quirks too—whether it’s resting her head dramatically over the armrest of the couch, riding along as your “backseat driver” in the car, or proudly carrying around her two favorite toys: a squeaky plush puppy and a rubber chicken. She plays gently with them and doesn’t try to tear them apart, which makes her even more endearing. Bambi is crate-trained, housetrained, walks well on a leash after the first few minutes of excitement, and rides beautifully in the car. She has also been muzzle-trained and will slip her head right in if she knows a hot dog is waiting at the end. The one thing she struggles with is nail trims—especially her front feet—so her future family will need patience and maybe some creative desensitization to help her through that challenge. She gets along fine with other dogs on walks, but in the home she would truly thrive as the only pet where she can soak up all the love and attention. She has done well around her foster’s teenage son and his friends, but she would be best suited for a home with adults or older kids rather than small children. She’s also shown no prey drive toward cats or squirrels, though she’ll chase if one dares run along the fence line. Bambi’s ideal home would be with a couple or family who are around often, patient enough to let her settle in at her own pace, and kind enough to continue building her trust. In return, you’ll be rewarded with a loyal, gentle companion who will make you laugh with her quirks, warm your lap with her cuddles, and brighten your days with her sweet, soulful presence. ========================= To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! form.jotform/51994996709176 . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
