ngto, NJ area to attend our adoption events at the Tractor Supply in Ringoes. An application for his adoption should be submitted at socorescue (no need to register or login). Questions about Chopper and/or our adoption policy should be sent to socorescue8gmail; please do not call the shelter's number.*** Chopper had formerly belonged to the sister (Debbie) of SoCo Rescue's President/CEO Scott Bennett, who passed away in January 2023. Prior to her passing, Debbie had asked Scott to promise if anything ever happened to her that he would make sure that Chopper was well-cared for and got a good home. Of course, Scott was more than willing to do just that. When Debbie passed away, one of her daughters took possession of Chopper and kept him for the next 2 1/2 years, but recently had to give him up due to some HOA rules. Of course, Scott immediately stepped up and recently took Chopper into his own home. While he would love to keep Chopper as one of his own, Scott realizes that it would be in the best interest of Chopper to gain a home where he can get more one-on-one time and fully flourish as he did while with Debbie. Chopper is a great little fellow who is house-trained, walks well on a leash and gets along great with other dogs, cats and children. He thrives on being a "lap" dog, loving to spend time curled up next to whoever desires to spend time with him. He isn't destructive at all, will stay in a crate when needed and will let you know if and when he needs to go outside to potty. And, an extra bonus, is that he's as cute as a button. Chopper will do very well in a home with other dogs, cats and children who know how to responsibly handle a small dog. Chopper has already been neutered and recently received an update on all of his annual vaccinations, de-wormings and preventative care. He is scheduled to be tested for heartworms and well disclosed those test results once known. But knowing that Debbie kept him on a monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventative, we're almost certain that he'll test negative. Knowing what Chopper means to Scott, he will be extremely decisive in who he lets adopt this wonderful dog. While he will be primarily an indoor dog, Chopper does love his outdoor time, so a home with access to the outdoors would be best.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
