r father was a Chihuahua. They were from a litter of three. Mei Mei is white with large black spots and some brown highlights. Her fur is a bit course. She requires regular combing to keep it from becoming tangled. Her toenails seem thick and long for her size. I have clipped them regularly myself, but not too short. She has been spayed. Mei Mei is very allergic to fleas and must be kept on flea prevention. She is probably about 10 pounds - she's a stocky little dog. Mei Mei craves attention and loves to sit in your lap being petted. She and Ashy are lickers, though not quite as much as when they were younger. Mei Mei is very vocal. She whimpers and makes her own kind of endearing sounds. She can be a bit timid at first around new people, but warms up fairly quickly. She is a bit afraid of other dogs at first. The only time I have ever seen her growl and show her teeth was when another dog approached her quickly. She has never demonstrated aggression to any person. Mei Mei and Ashy love to wrestle, play and chase each other around the couch. Their play can be boisterous and loud at times, but they love each other very much and would not harm one another. They calm down quickly when scolded. They play the games they have developed throughout their lives. Mei Mei will playfully or anxiously put her teeth on me occasionally, but she is growing out of that. She is simply playing with me as she does with Ashy. She has never bitten me or shown any aggression at all. She is very sweet and loving. Ashy is more independent than Mei Mei, but he also loves to be held and to have lap time. He is smaller than Mei Mei and is on the skinny side. He loves to play fetch with a ball and springs around the yard chasing squirrels and bugs. His coat is smooth and shorter than Mei Mei's. He is mostly black with some brown highlights and a white patch on his chest. His tail rests in a loop and he has an underbite. He is very cute. Ashy loves everyone, including other dogs. He grooms Mei Mei around the shoulders and neck. He has never shown any aggression at all. He is fairly quiet. Ashy has not yet been neutered but he will be before he is adopted out. Neither Mei Mei nor Ashy have ever been around children. I feel like Ashy would love children. It may take Mei Mei a bit of getting used to. They are not trained to be on a leash. We live in the country and it has just never been needed. They are not completely house trained. They are at home alone for long periods of time due to my work and commute schedule. They try. I believe that with the right routine and diligence they will improve.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
