39;s not too big, not too small, but is a just-right size for loving. She really enjoys running around the back yard, so a fenced yard is important. Sometimes she just sits on a bench and watches people walk by, looks up at the trees, and chills. When we head into the house, she will follow behind. She has recently started playing with a ball, all on her own. She runs with it, drops it, and then picks it up again to run some more. Tina would love to have a sibling dog to play with. She needs an active playmate, not the old man that she has now! Tina is a shy girl and will need some time and patience to warm up to her new family. She still does not come to us on command, but will jump on the sofa to sit by us. She sometimes snuggles up next to us. She is not aggressive and doesn't bite. We do not know, however, how she would respond to a small child who doesn't know “dog etiquette.” It has been reported from a former foster that she is not friendly to cats. She has chased rabbits a couple of times in our yard, but seems to ignore squirrels and birds. Tina is neutral to visitors to the house (never any jumping, etc.), and cautious with people she meets away from home. She likes to play with dogs who visit. Tina understands these words: outside, hungry/eat, no, stay, and her name. She loves her meal times and wants to go outside immediately after she eats. It's not necessarily because she “needs” to, but it's her routine now and dogs love their routines. She is completely potty trained. In the time that we've had her, she has never had an inside accident. We have bathed Tina in the bathtub without any problems. She tolerates it well. Tina is not an escape artist. She knows her boundaries. But she is always either leashed or in a fenced yard. We have had Tina on short and longer car trips. She does well. She likes to look out the windows or else will lay in her bed in the back seat. She picks up on new behaviors easily. My husband says she is the smartest foster we've ever had. Tina does not chew things in the house. She has small stuffed toys that she treats as her babies (she had puppies in April) and has a fondness for socks left on the floor. She brings them to her bed and stuffs them into the corners. Other facts about Tina: not affected at all by sirens, thunder, or fireworks. walks on a leash with no problem. is crate trained. Please consider adopting Tina before her foster dad falls completely in love with her (if it's not already too late.)

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
