8-year-old senior — but our vet confirmed that he's more like 4 or 5 years old! We don't really know anything about Freddie's past since he was found as a stray, but it couldn't have been an easy one. That hasn't stopped him from being a sweet, chill boy who gets along with everyone, though! Freddie is a rather stoic dog when you first meet him, but once he knows you, he starts showing his "spicy" side. He has a really funny "woof" that he emits when he's in a playful mood — or when he wants attention, which is quite often! Freddie wants to be in the middle of everything that his people are doing, and he voices his displeasure when he feels left out. (It's actually pretty hilarious — and adorable!) Give him a treat, though, and all will be forgiven! Oh, and Freddie's not picky at all when it comes to treats: biscuits, Kongs with peanut butter — you name it, he loves it! That will help immensely with obedience training, too. (The Furever Project requires a group obedience class.) Freddie is both crate trained and housebroken. He also walks politely on a leash. Freddie is good with other dogs, and he enjoys play sessions with his doggy foster sister. He's also fine with cats — although, he does like to get "up close and personal" with his kitty foster siblings, so he shouldn't go to an adoptive home with any shy or fearful cats. Freddie is a healthy boy, overall, although he has allergies and is currently taking a daily dose of Apoquel. Whether the allergies are seasonal or not is yet to be determined, so it's possible that he'll need to be on the medication long-term. Also, Freddie's left eyelid was damaged prior to his arrival at the shelter, so the eye looks a little deformed. Our vet determined that his vision is perfectly fine, though, and he won't need surgery. Freddie has a lot of love to offer a family or an individual who is ready to give him the happily ever after he so richly deserves! Could that be you? If so, please submit an adoption application for him today! NOTE: Dog Breed Information — We do not utilize DNA testing for breed and mix determinations. The breed and mix identifications provided on the web pages for our dogs are based on information provided by shelter staff and dogs' previous owners, our visual assessment of their physical characteristics, and their demeanor and behavioral traits.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
