mellow, eager to learn, as she loves praise and treats, Melody is lovely. She loves spending time outside and even likes the rain. She discovered that potted plants have dirt, how much fun it could be to dig in them if a puppy were allowed, and that people frown upon such activities. She's met the resident cat, showing us that she can cohabitate with a dog workable cat. She really loves being around people, much more than other dogs. She has discovered toys and picked up potty training easily, is a pro at using the doggy door, and is religious about going potty outside. She's not had a single accident in the house. Her tail wags like a happy little metronome every time she gets love, resulting in her name, Melody! This adorable gal loves praise and treats, which makes guiding her a breeze. Melody has been heading out on excursions to the pumpkin patch, where she met lots of little kids and adored them; to coffee shops to watch the world go by and learn all about life; and for walks to get her exercise and walk nicely on leash. Melody is excellent in the crate and has just slid easily into the resident dog pack. This little one lives in a household with three teenage humans, a cat, and three big dogs, which gives us a good sense of how she fits into a busy household. You might remember that Melody unexpectedly landed in the ER 36 hrs after arriving in our care…. On her second day with us, she began to feel very ill, experiencing a high fever and extreme lethargy. Her condition was severe, with a high white blood cell count, a temperature of 104.5°F, and X-rays revealing that she had pneumonia. Landing in the ICU at VEG Palo Alto for a 24-hour stay on IV fluids, intravenous meds, and time in an oxygen cage, the vets were concerned by her inflamed esophagus in addition to pneumonia. But the second set of x-rays at discharge showed the concern over megaesophagus resolving, with the radiology final report indicating her esophagus was likely irritated from repeated vomiting. Melody headed to her foster home, where she received Baytril and Clavamox for healing under the loving care of her foster family. Since finishing her course of antibiotics, Melody has seen our vet, who confirmed that she's a healthy pup with clear lungs and a normal esophagus on X-rays. Her vet team also fell in love with our beautiful girl. .We are incredibly grateful for your support, which provided $ 1,600 in donations towards her $ 4,400 initial vet bill at VEG Palo Alto. If you're inclined, we would be grateful for additional donations through her link on Melody's bio at shepheroes/adopt or shepheroes/donate, or via Venmo (shepheroes). 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
