Foster Home Feedback 10/12/25 Volunteer Feedback: I had the pleasure of spending the weekend with Sleep Token, a sweet, silly, and energetic pup who came home with me for a kennel break. It was a great opportunity to see how he behaves in a home setting, and he truly impressed me! He appears to be potty trained—no accidents at all. I work from home, so I was able to let him out midday on Friday, and he did great even with us coming and going throughout the weekend. Sleep Token slept soundly in his kennel overnight when placed in the same room. He was quiet in the morning and waited patiently to be let out while the rest of the house was still asleep. He sat nicely for his meals and curled up next to my son during family movie night, snoring like an old man—adorable! We kenneled Sleep Token for a couple of hours while we were out, and that was the only time we heard him bark or howl. It lasted just a few minutes before he settled down and slept the rest of the time. He was also very respectful of the baby gates, never attempting to jump over them—even when we were all upstairs. He simply waited in the entryway. The only household item Sleep Token couldn’t resist was my furry slippers, which is pretty common for visiting pups. He loves soft toys and played gently, keeping all the stuffing intact. He’s very treat-motivated and knows several commands including “sit,” “down,” and “paw/shake.” Sleep Token did well on neighborhood walks. He got a little mouthy with the leash a couple of times, but quickly refocused with a stop, sit, treat, and restart routine. He seems dog-friendly and isn’t reactive—he was barked at by several dogs behind fences and simply looked curiously in their direction. He was great in the fenced yard, came when I whistled, and did well on a tie-out when I briefly went inside or had the gate open for house repairs. Sleep Token is super people-friendly and wants to greet everyone we pass. He’s working on not jumping and gives full-body wags when meeting new friends. Since he’s still a puppy, Sleep Token can be a bit mouthy. Treats and toys helped redirect him most of the time, though occasionally it took a little longer to settle. He was much gentler with my 13- and 9-year-olds and redirected more easily with them. He also did great in the car. The first ride was full of curiosity, but after that, Sleep Token just sat calmly on the passenger seat, taking in the views. He’s a lovable pup with so much joy to share and is ready to learn, play, and be part of a family that will help him grow into the amazing dog he’s meant to be. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
